Three days later, in the afternoon, the dark weather that had hung around for days finally broke. Sunlight came through the large window of the hospital room, making the place warm and still.
The anesthesia had worn off long ago, and the sharp pain from my wounds kept reminding me I was still alive.
I leaned back on the rocking hospital bed. I still felt weak, but at least I had a little strength now.
Noral sat by the window, her head tilted slightly, fully focused on her right hand.
I couldn’t look away from her.
The sunlight fell on her, clearly showing her thin shoulders and neck.
She was slowly moving each finger on her right hand, one at a time.
Her movements were slow, stiff, and painful.
Every time she moved a finger, her brows pulled tight, and small drops of sweat gathered on her forehead. I knew it must hurt badly.
But she kept her mouth closed, locked in a quiet struggle with her own body.
My eyes followed her shaking fingers, then the white gauze wrapped around her hand, and finally stopped on her stubborn face.
My chest tightened with a heavy guilt I couldn’t shake.
I wanted to tell her to stop and rest. I wanted to reach out and hold her hand.
But my throat felt blocked, and no words came out. I just watched her.
Her pain seemed to sink straight into my own heart.
The room stayed quiet, only the beeping of machines and her soft, strained sounds breaking the silence.
The hospital door pushed open just a little from the outside.
No knocking. No footsteps.
Just a soft noise, then two small furry heads peeked in slowly, one above the other.
When I saw them clearly, the call button I was holding shipped from my hand onto the blanket.
My whole body went still right away.
The one on top was a little boy, about three or four years old. His hair was a deep brown with a small natural
wave.
He had the same unusual gray–blue eyes as I.
He looked around the room carefully. When his eyes reached Norah, they brightened for a moment.

But then he turned to me, and his small brows pulled together. His look held a cautious, mild pushback that didn’t seem normal for a kid his age.
Below him was a little girl, looking a bit younger than the boy. Her soft golden–brown hair was tied into two loose little pigtails.
She had big amber eyes, very clear, just like Norah’s.
Her
eyes moved around fast, curious as she checked out the unfamiliar room.
When she spotted Norah by the window, her small face lit up right away with a smile.
“Mommy!”
The little girl’s voice was bright and sweet, still babyish, breaking the quiet in the room.
It was like she didn’t even notice me, the patient with bandages on my face, looking a bit rough. Her small body slipped quickly through the crack in the door, and she ran straight toward Norah by the window, arms open wide.
My eyes stayed on that little girl running to Norah, watching her jump into Norah’s arms, and Norah reaching out to hold her close.
Then I froze and turned toward the doorway.
The little boy was already standing straight, just standing there without moving.
He lifted his head and looked right at me with those same eyes, exactly like mine.
Time seemed to drag.
I stared hard at his small face, the way his brows pulled tight on their own, his high nose, and that unhappy little line his lips made when pressed together…
My heart felt like it got hit hard. It skipped once, then started beating fast.
They looked so much alike.
Just like the old photos my mom kept of me as a kid, exactly the same.
It was like seeing my childhood self placed right in front of me.
My eyes went back to the little girl in Norah’s arms, acting all spoiled.
Sunlight touched her hair and face, the curve of her smiling lips, and the small dimples on her cheeks.
She was basically a mini Norah.
Kids…
Are these… my kids?!
I remembered hearing that word back in the cave when I was almost out of it, like a dream.
And now it was real. Right here, alive in front of me.

“Uh…”
A low sound came from my throat.

I tried to sit up, but the movement pulled at my wound and broken ribs, sending pain so sharp my sight blurred and cold sweat spread on my forehead.
But I hardly noticed the pain. I just stared at those two kids, cyes wide, breathing fast and rough.
I reached out with a shaking hand, pointing toward the door and the window.
My mouth opened and closed a few times before broken words finally came out.
“Norah, they, they are…”
By the window, Norah took a long breath. Then, holding the little girl, she slowly stood, turned around, and looked at me with a calm face.
The sunlight came in behind her, making her look soft and gentle.
She looked at me and said slowly, “Lucien, meet them.”
She moved her hand, and the little boy by the door ran quickly to her, wrapping his arms around her legs.
She touched the boy’s head. “This is Leo.”
Then she looked down at the little girl in her arms. “And this is Luna.”
She stopped for a moment, then looked back at me. “They’re your kids.”
