Chapter 213
Norah’s POV

The doctor took off his mask, looked at me, and said in calm, clear voice, “Mr. Constantine’s surgery went well. The bullet didn’t hit any main organs, but he lost alot of blood, and his intestines were hurt; we already fixed that. He has three cracked ribs that will need time to mend. The biggest worry is the infection. His older wound wasn’t handled right, and soaking in seawater caused a strong early–stage sepsis.”
He paused, then added, “But he arrived in time. We already started strong antibiotics, and his vital signs are stable now. He’s past the immediate danger. Still, his body is worn out, and the medicine will keep him asleep for a while. We need to keep him in the ICU for close checks over the next 24 hours.”
Out of danger.
Those words made every bit of strength leave my body.
My legs went weak, and if Irina and Katarina hadn’t held me up, I would’ve fallen to the floor.
Tears rushed out at once, running down my face so fast could hardly see anything.
He’s alive.
He really made it.
Everything afterward felt like a blur; he was moved, and people hurried around cleaning and changing clothes.
I felt like a puppet while a nurse cleaned, medicated, and wrapped the wound on my hand, but my eyes never left the man being pushed out of the OR.
Tubes ran from him in every direction, his face pale like he had no life left in him.
He wasn’t settled until he reached the special ICU next to the VIP area, behind a large glass wall. Only then could I get close again.
The monitor beeped with a soft, even rhythm, the changing lines on the screen sounding like the sweetest thing in the world right now.
Irina whispered behind me, “Norah, what are you going to do?”
“Wait for him to wake up.” I stared at the sleeping man behind the glass, watching his chest move in small
breaths.
As I looked at him, the faces of Leo and Luna flashed in my mind, two small faces that looked just like him.
Lies, mixed–up guesses, secrets…
Enough. I meant it. Enough.
I turned to Irina and Katarina, and I said in a steady voice, “Katarina, book the penthouse suite at the George V Hotel. Also, get me a family suite that connects, and tell them I need two cribs.”
Irina and Katarina both froze.
“Norah, you…”

“Then,” I cut Irina off and took a deep breath, “get in touch with Mateo. Tell him to bring my stars here as fast as he can.”
Irina went pale right away. “Are you crazy?! Norah! You want to tell him now? Right after he almost died?!”
“Yeah.” I stared at the man behind the glass, and tears streamed down again.
“He almost died. I almost lost him for good. I don’t want to wait anymore. I don’t want to hide anything anymore.”
“When he wakes up, I want him to see exactly what he missed these past three years.”
“He wants the truth, right? Then I’ll give him everything all at once.”
Lucien lay still on the hospital bed, an oxygen mask covering most of his face, only his closed eyes and long lashes showing. His pale skin cast soft shadows below.
I pushed the ICU door open and stepped inside..
The smell of disinfectant hit me even harder in here.
I walked up to his bedside and looked down at him.
At last, it was just the two of us.
There were no titles, no mind games, no tricks or fake fronts, just a man, badly hurt, unconscious, and fragile as hell.
I slowly reached out, my hand shaking, wanting to touch his face. But my fingertips stopped right before they brushed his skin.
I was scared.
Scared that even a small touch would shock him. Scared I might touch the torn–up wounds on his body.
In the end, my hand lowered and rested softly, carefully over his pale, cold hand.
My hand was cold too. The wounds under the bandages throbbed a little, but all I wanted right then was to feel the small, real warmth from him, to feel that slow, steady pulse.
Time slipped by in complete silence.
I didn’t know how long, maybe minutes, maybe it felt endless.
Under my palm, his cold fingers moved the tiniest bit..
My heart jumped, and my breath caught.
Then his closed eyes slowly opened.
At first, his eyes were unfocused, empty, and tired.
He slowly looked at the ceiling, then at the machines.

Then, little by little, his eyes fixed in place and stayed on my face.
His cracked, dry lips moved behind the oxygen mask.
He made no sound.
But I knew he was calling my name.
“Norah…” A thin whisper, soft as a breath.
Tears rushed down my checks again, falling onto the back of his hand.
I wanted to smile at him, tell him it was okay, ask him if he hurt anywhere, but my throat tightened with a sharp ache. Nothing came out. All I could do was hold his hand tight, hold on hard, and use my eyes to pour out every bit of fear, relief, and all the words I couldn’t speak.
His eyes seemed to clear a little.
He tried to move them, shifting his focus from my face down to our joined hands.
My hand, wrapped in white gauze, now showed a small red mark spreading near the edge of the bandage.
His brow pulled tight right away.
Those eyes, which had only just started to brighten, suddenly showed regret, hurt, and guilt.
His lips shook beneath the oxygen mask. He tried to speak, but only rough breaths came out.
Then, using what little strength he had, he held my hand in the other way, closing my fingers inside his palm.
His eyes stayed on mine without looking away. The oxygen mask fogged a little with each breath.
He spoke slowly, weakly, “Norah, it’s all over.”
“All those who hurt you, used you, made you cry…‘
“It’s all over.”
His fingers gently touched the gauze on the back of my hand. “From now on, I won’t let anyone, me included, lay a hand on you again.“.
