Robert narrowed his eyes and looked at her with a nasty expression. “You’ve got a lot of nerve for someone your age. I’ll give you that. In all these years you’re the first person who’s dared to pick a fight with me like this. I guess you’re just too young to know better. But let’s get one thing straight. Merrick gave her a kind look. “Skyreach is going through all this hell and you think I’m just gonna sit at home? That Whitmore kid is full of it. He promised me he’d look after you and then I see people threatening you in your own office. If I didn’t show up these people would keep thinking you’re an easy target because you’re on your own.”

He turned his head and gave Robert a look that could kill.

Robert looked confused. “And who the hell are you?”

“What? We’ve been doing business this long and you don’t even know who your partners are?” Merrick laughed but there was no humor in it. “I guess Robert really does think he’s better than everyone else. No wonder people say the Sorens act like they own the damn city,”

Rowan stared at the old man. Suddenly a piece of the research he’d done on Lilian clicked into place. “Wait. You’re Mr. Merrick? From Philips Corp?”

The room collectively lost its mind. Philips Corp didn’t scream for attention like the Sorens did but everyone knew they were a global powerhouse. The only reason people didn’t recognize Merrick was because he hated the spotlight and never did interviews.
