Sebastian's knees buckled, his frame swaying dangerously. Beside him, Foster lunged forward to steady him, shouting, "Careful!"
"No, I don't believe it. I don't believe a single word of it. How could she possibly be dead?"
In truth, this very thought had crossed his mind countless times over the past few days, but he had aggressively pushed it away every single time. He had forced himself to remain certain that she would be fine, especially given the monumental secret she carried within her.
Yet hearing these raw details laid bare left him utterly cold. Perhaps he had been far too optimistic from the very beginning. Or perhaps he had simply been lying to himself all along, entirely unwilling to face reality.
Merrick's voice sounded profoundly desolate as he spoke. "Do you truly think I would use something like this to curse Lilian? She is the granddaughter I only just managed to bring back into my life. I haven't even had the chance to make things up to her, yet she has already left me like this. Do you think my heart doesn't bleed? Do you think I don't feel any resentment? That foolish girl sacrificed herself entirely for you, without sparing a single thought for an old man like me. How could she be so cruel?" Tears streamed down the creases of his face as he tightly clutched his chest, his expression twisting with sudden physical distress.
Seeing this, the head butler quickly stepped up to rub Merrick's back, helping him catch his breath while trying to soothe him. "The doctors explicitly said your body cannot handle any more emotional stress. Besides, if you work yourself into a state like this, Miss Lilian will never be able to rest in peace."
Merrick finally managed to steady his breathing, his voice cracked with deep agony. "If that girl actually cared about me, she would never have made such a choice. An old man burying his own children and grandchildren, haven't I had to endure that enough times in this life?"
Eric turned to a nearby maid and instructed, "Go to my bedroom and fetch the folder on the desk."
