Chapter 157: Nora’s Scheme

Behind the scenes, Nora knelt carefully beside Eda, her fingers deftly smoothing the layers of the intricate peacock costume. The outfit was a masterpiece of feathers and silk, draped with elegance and complexity to match the demands of the performance. The backstage area buzzed softly with anticipation, the faint hum of the audience filtering through the curtains.

Eda’s eyes wandered toward the brightly lit stage, her voice low and reflective. “If only Lillian had joined us… she would have brought such honor to our class,” she said with a wistful tone.

Nora let out a sharp, dismissive snort as she adjusted the hem of the skirt with precision. “Honor? All she’s got are grades. She’s never once stepped into any school activity. If she really had talent, do you think she’d hide away like that? You know how much she craves attention—if she could, she’d steal the spotlight every single time.”

Eda’s reply was soft, almost a whisper. “Is that true? What a pity. With so many important people here tonight, I would have liked to see how I compare to her.”

A cold spark ignited in Nora’s eyes as she glanced toward the stage, her gaze sharp and calculating.

The program had already begun, one performance flowing into the next, each showcasing the impressive talents of Riverdale High’s students with increasing polish and skill.

When it was finally Eda’s turn, she stepped onto the stage with grace. Her dance was flawless—every movement precise, every expression perfectly controlled. Her natural beauty combined with a delicate, almost fragile aura that seemed to stir a protective instinct in the men watching from the audience.

As she held her final pose, the auditorium erupted in applause, thunderous and sincere. Even the dignitaries seated in the front rows rose to their feet, clapping enthusiastically.

Eda descended the stage with a gentle smile, soft and serene like a calm river.

The host returned to the microphone, offering warm praise before announcing, “Next, from the freshman year, we invite Lillian to perform for us.”

For a brief moment, Lillian froze, caught off guard. Jill gave her a quick nudge. “Lillian… did they just say your name?”

“I didn’t sign up,” Lillian murmured, disbelief coloring her voice. “This has to be some kind of mistake.”

But the host’s calm voice rang out clearly across the hall. “This performance was selected by the highest votes from the online poll. It’s an impromptu segment. Please welcome Lillian to the stage!”

The crowd erupted instantly, dozens of voices calling her name, the chant swelling until it felt as though the entire auditorium was shouting in unison.
