Chapter 173: A Surprise
Lillian’s eyes narrowed, icy and unyielding, as she observed the receptionist scurry away, her smile dripping with insincere flattery. It didn’t matter how vast or prestigious a company became—there would always be those who looked down on others, sneering from their petty pedestals. Yet, if Skyreach Group was to continue its ambitious expansion, the caliber of its employees had to be impeccable, beyond superficial charm or shallow attitudes.
The receptionist soon returned, her grin even more ingratiating as she approached. “Ms. Hans, welcome. Are you here to see Ms. Karina?” she asked, voice sweet but rehearsed.
The woman standing before her nodded with a proud tilt of her chin, while her assistant puffed up, radiating arrogance. “Naturally. Our Youxi’s time is extremely valuable.”
Without missing a beat, the receptionist replied, “Of course, of course! I’ll contact Ms. Karina immediately. Please have a seat in the lounge while you wait.” She grabbed the desk phone, fingers flying over the buttons in a hurried manner.
Hans turned her head slightly, her gaze catching Lillian’s. For a moment, she froze, struck silent. The girl was breathtaking—after all her years in the entertainment industry, she had never encountered such stunning beauty. A strange unease fluttered in her chest, though she quickly masked it behind a haughty smirk as she swept past, determined not to show any weakness.
Returning to the front desk, the receptionist noticed Lillian still standing there, unwavering. Her tone sharpened, laced with irritation. “Didn’t I tell you to leave? Why are you still here? Ms. Karina is far too busy to meet with someone like you.”
Hans, reclining gracefully in the lounge, caught the exchange. Her confidence swelled like a tide. So what if the girl was beautiful? The world was full of pretty faces. It was substance, not looks, that mattered.
Casting a disdainful glance at Lillian, Hans whispered to her assistant, “See that? She thinks her looks will get her everything. But beauty is the most common currency these days. What truly counts is being grounded, practical. These young girls—what are they even thinking?”
Lillian’s voice cut through the air, sharp and unwavering. “I came here to see Ms. Karina. As a receptionist, your duty is to relay messages—not to make decisions on behalf of upper management. Tell me—what Skyreach Group policy allows frontline staff to override the judgment of executives?”
A cold wave of dread swept over the receptionist’s heart. Around them, a small crowd of employees had gathered, drawn by the rising tension. Flustered, she snapped, “Stop spouting nonsense! I’ve seen plenty of girls like you try to worm their way in to become stars. Ms. Karina isn’t someone you can just demand to meet. Now leave at once.”
