Chapter 233: Her Counterattack
Everly observed the unfolding scene with a sharp, mocking glare, her eyes gleaming with concealed scorn. Though she dared not insult this woman outright, there were subtler ways to release her simmering frustration.
Just as she anticipated her slap would land squarely on Lillian’s face, the girl’s reflexes surprised everyone. Lillian caught Everly’s descending wrist midair with an effortless grip. Without hesitation, her other hand lashed out swiftly and without mercy. A rapid succession of sharp slaps struck Everly’s cheek, each one echoing sharply in the tense air. Within moments, the woman’s face was flushed and swollen, the sting of humiliation plainly visible.
The sudden reversal stunned the crowd into silence. Not even Everly had expected Lillian to have the audacity to fight back so boldly.
“How dare you!” Everly hissed, her voice trembling with rage. “Do you even understand who these women are?”
Lillian glanced down at her reddened palm, her brow furrowing briefly before she fixed Everly with a look full of scornful amusement. “Ms. Everly, it seems your memory is rather short. Sebastian himself told me that, as the future mistress of the Austine family, I have every right to discipline anyone who disrespects me—without hesitation.” She paused, her eyes narrowing. “Tell me, Ms. Everly, have you already forgotten what he said?”
Everly’s mouth opened, but no words came out.
The women nearby paled visibly. Mistress of the Austine family? Could this girl truly claim such a title? Their eyes flicked nervously toward Everly, whose face darkened with unease, and a cold dread settled in their stomachs.
Everly’s tone grew colder, edged with venom. “Ms. Lillian, you and Sebastian aren’t married yet. You’re not officially the Austine family’s mistress.” In her mind, she asserted fiercely, *I am. I’m the one who belongs in that role.*
Lillian’s lips curled into a mocking smile. “Oh? So what you’re really saying is, since I’m not married to Sebastian yet, it’s open season for them to bully me?”
