Chapter 285: The Gala

From somewhere upstairs, a teasing voice floated down the staircase. “Quit flattering her; her tail’s about to wag all the way up to the ceiling.” Elaine stood poised on the third-floor landing, one hand resting lightly on the railing as he watched the scene below.

“Hey,” Noreen replied with a playful, almost coquettish tone, a mischievous sparkle in her eyes. “What kind of brother talks about his own sister like that?”

Elaine descended the stairs with a casual swagger, one hand tucked into his pocket, his voice dripping with mockery. “I’m just looking out for you. Haven’t you heard the saying? Pride comes before a fall, but humility is what clears the path ahead. Think of this as my way of pushing you to keep moving forward.”

Manny chuckled, amusement coloring his words. “Wow, Elaine. Didn’t expect you to drop something that deep. Now the rest of us feel a little small in comparison.”

Nearby, Fawks, lounging lazily with an air of indifference, nodded in agreement. “Couldn’t agree more.”

“Same here,” Cameron added, flashing a grin.

Elaine reached the bottom of the staircase and glanced at his group of friends with a half-smile. “If you’re interested, I could share a few more pearls of wisdom. Might help sharpen your taste—maybe even land you a girlfriend.”

“No thanks,” Manny responded quickly, shaking his head. “The world outside is too beautiful to be tied down this early. I’d rather stay free than get stuck on just one branch.”

At that moment, soft footsteps echoed from above.

The girl appeared on the stairs, descending slowly. Her hair was swept up elegantly, a diamond hairpin catching the soft glow of the chandelier, sparkling faintly. She wore a black lace dress that hugged her figure, paired with delicate champagne-colored heels. Her makeup was light and natural, highlighting her bright, luminous eyes that shone with youthful innocence.

For a heartbeat, she seemed to steal the breath from everyone in the room—even Noreen.

That usual aura of quiet superiority Noreen carried dissolved instantly, leaving only raw astonishment in her gaze. But that surprise quickly twisted into something darker—an intense, bitter unwillingness to accept what she was witnessing.

Manny let out a low whistle as he looked at Lillian. “Sebastian’s got an eye, I’ll give him that. He spotted her potential early on and kept her close all this time. That’s impressive.”
