Chapter 286: A Man’s Confession at the Banquet

Lyla’s eyes widened in surprise at the man’s straightforwardness. When it came to her brother, she had always believed that trivial matters barely registered in his mind. Yet, what caught her off guard was the fact that he had spared a moment’s thought for a girl he had only just encountered.

“So, you’ve taken a liking to her?” she asked, raising an eyebrow.

Janus didn’t answer immediately; instead, he simply shook his head in silence.

Undeterred, Lyla’s voice took on a cool, measured tone. “You should understand that being a Soren means carrying the weight of our family’s reputation. Our marriages aren’t personal choices—they’re alliances. If you cling to unrealistic fantasies, all you’ll find is heartbreak.”

Janus lifted the last sip of wine from his glass and met his sister’s steady gaze. “Grandfather suggested you marry Sebastian. Are you truly willing to accept that?”

A lazy smile played on Lyla’s lips. “Why wouldn’t I? Sebastian is remarkable, isn’t he?” She admitted to herself that at first, she had resisted the idea. But the instant she saw Sebastian, a spark of excitement—and even a hint of eagerness—had stirred within her. Discovering he already had a girlfriend, however, had sparked a sharp pang of jealousy.

“He is remarkable, but Lillian is already by his side. Do you honestly believe you’re so special that he’d leave her for you?” Janus pressed, his tone steady and unyielding.

Lyla’s confident smile deepened, almost daring. “Why not? I don’t think I’m any less than Lillian. Sure, she’s younger, but I’m convinced she’s not as extraordinary as I am. If I had met Sebastian first, he would have fallen for me first.”

Her certainty was absolute—something she had always believed deep down.

Janus studied his sister’s unwavering expression and couldn’t resist probing further. “And if Sebastian insists on marrying Lillian? Then what? You’d have no chance at all.”

“No,” she said firmly, shaking her head. “A family like the Whitmores would never let him marry a girl without a proper background. No matter how strong their feelings, it would all come to nothing in the end. The Soren family is different. I believe Sebastian, as an exceptional heir, will understand who truly holds the greatest value for him.”
