Chapter 292: The Second Blow
Lillian fixed her gaze steadily on the woman standing before her, a cruel, mocking smile tugging at the corners of her lips. Without uttering a single word, she raised her hand and delivered two swift, stinging slaps. Her voice then pierced the stunned silence like a blade. “If I ever hear that filth coming out of your mouth again, I swear I’ll slap you every single time. What, just because you’re a celebrity, you think you can say whatever nonsense you want?”
Her eyes swept across the room with a sharpness that felt almost physical. “And you, Ms. Lyla… I’ve heard you’re supposed to be well-educated, but after today, I have to say—I’m impressed. Though not in the way you’d hope. Seems the rumors about you didn’t quite live up to the hype. You’re nowhere near the polished, powerful image people like to paint. Spreading gossip, stirring trouble, twisting the truth—that’s more fitting for a tabloid writer than someone from the Soren family. Looks like their idea of sophistication isn’t worth bragging about after all.”
Her biting words sent a wave of shock rippling through the crowd. No one had expected Lillian to openly attack Lyla with such venom.
Noticing the flicker of disbelief flash across Lyla’s face, Lillian’s tone sharpened even further, dripping with sarcasm. “What’s the matter? Did I say something that isn’t true? Everyone here knows exactly what’s going on. Trying to corner me like I’m some easy target… you clearly picked the wrong person for that. If you’re so confident about me and Ryan, then let’s settle this right here, right now.”
A low murmur stirred among the onlookers, some exchanging uneasy glances.
Suddenly, Robert’s voice thundered through the room, firm and commanding. “What on earth is happening here?” If he still couldn’t see that there was more beneath the surface, then he truly was blind. He had never cared much for scheming or power plays, but on Soren family grounds, such matters were entirely different. These kinds of scandals could tarnish the family name beyond repair.
Silence fell like a heavy blanket—no one dared to utter a word.
Robert’s sharp eyes scanned the room, his expression growing darker with each passing second of silence. Finally, he barked, “Lyla, you explain.”
Lyla cast a quick, nervous glance at Robert, her voice barely steady as she spoke. “I’m honestly not sure what to make of it. Ms. Hans told us there were twin lotuses blooming in the garden and invited us to see them. But when we got there, we saw Mr. Ryan making a move on Ms. Harrington. And she didn’t push him away. So we confronted her. She’s Mr. Whitmore’s fiancée—behaving like that, openly, with another man—it’s just not right. Then suddenly, Ms. Harrington pulled out her needles and knocked Mr. Ryan out cold, and you all saw what happened after.”
