Chapter 296: Warmth

Janus’s words struck Robert like a sudden, heavy blow. Over the past few years, Robert had slipped into a sort of semi-retirement, a state of quiet withdrawal that made it seem as though he had been absent from the world for far too long.

“So… do you really believe Lyla has any chance?” Robert asked, his voice laced with a mix of hope and skepticism.

Janus turned away, his gaze fixed on the cold, shadowed night beyond the window. His voice was low, weighed down by certainty and a hint of bitterness. “Not the slightest chance.”

Those words sank deep into Robert’s mind, leaving him lost in thought. The room fell into a heavy silence, broken only by the faint ticking of a clock somewhere in the study.

After a long pause, Robert exhaled slowly, a sigh filled with resignation. “Then there’s no point in letting her waste her energy. Tell her to focus everything on tomorrow’s auction. As we agreed, whoever wins that piece of land will be the one to form an alliance with the Soren family.”

Janus nodded silently, then turned and left the room without another word.

Unbeknownst to both men, hidden just around the corner in the dim shadows, Lyla stood frozen in place. Every word had reached her ears, clear and unmistakable, and the cold sting of their dismissal settled over her like a physical weight.

Elsewhere, inside a villa shrouded in darkness, a dimly lit bedroom held a tense atmosphere.

A small, slender figure sat quietly on a sofa, their face lost in the shadows. Nearby, a tall man leaned forward slightly, speaking in hushed Radovian tones. “I’m sorry. The mission failed. That woman was taken away by the Dracovian man’s people.”

A cold, cruel voice cut through the room, sharp and unforgiving. “You fool. How could you fail at such a simple task? That woman’s capture will surely reveal our location. Utterly reckless.”

The man flinched under the harsh reprimand. “It was my incompetence,” he admitted quietly.

The oppressive darkness seemed to press down on them, the air thick and stifling, making the room feel even heavier, more suffocating.

“Forget it for now,” the sinister voice commanded. “Pull back. We won’t be able to get that little girl anytime soon. With that man’s resources, it won’t be long before he discovers where I am.”

The following morning dawned clear and bright. The sky stretched endlessly overhead, a pure, flawless blue without a single cloud to mar its perfection.
