The receptionist kept her polite smile. “Is that so? Then perhaps you should wait until you truly become. the chairman’s wife before making such claims.”
Laney stomped her foot in frustration. She had already called Sebastian multiple times, but he never answered. She couldn’t get past the front desk, and without seeing him, how could she possibly tell him her news?
Just as she was at a loss, the elevator doors slid open.
Sebastian stepped out with his steady stride, Foster following close behind, carrying his coat and briefcase.
Laney’s heart leapt. She hurried forward, her eyes shy yet full of anticipation. “Sebastian.”
Sebastian glanced at her, his tone icy. “And what business does Ms, Laney have with me?”
“I… I…” Laney glanced at Foster nearby, hesitating. “Sebastian, could we speak somewhere private? There’s something important I need to tell you.”
Sebastian’s voice was cold and firm. “I don’t see what Ms. Laney and I could possibly have to discuss alone. If you have nothing else, I must ask you not to come here again. I already have a fiancée, and I won’t allow misunderstandings to arise because of something like this.” With that, he brushed past her and walked toward the exit.
Laney’s face paled. As he passed, she blurted out, “Sebastian, I’m pregnant.”
Her voice was loud enough to echo through the lobby, leaving everyone frozen in shock.
“What? Someone’s pregnant with the chairman’s child?”
“But the chairman already has a fiancée–I’ve seen her myself, and it’s not this woman.”
“Exactly. I’ve seen them together too. He dotes on her completely. So what is this supposed to mean?”
“I don’t know… but I can’t believe the chairman would ever cheat. That’s not his character.”
Laney rushed to block Sebastian’s path, holding out the report. “Sebastian, I’m pregnant. It’s true.”
Sebastian gave the report a brief glance before replying with a thin smile. “Then congratulations, Ms. Laney. But I fail to understand–why would Laney’s pregnancy concern me? Why bring this to me?”
Laney’s eyes widened, her voice breaking with hurt. “Sebastian, how can you say that? I’m carrying your child! Did you forget? Over a month ago–at Ravenwood Manor-”
“Watch your words,” Sebastian cut her off sharply. “I, Sebastian Whitmore, have only ever loved one woman–my fiancée. I would never betray her. If you continue with these lies, I’ll have my lawyer deal with you.” Without another glance, he strode out.
Laney stood frozen in the center of the lobby, tears brimming in her eyes. She had imagined he would be thrilled, that he would welcome her with open arms after hearing the news. But the cold truth was nothing 1/2
