Lilian got out of the car and looked at the scenery before them. The setting sun gradually dipped below the horizon, and the glow of the sunset enveloped the entire sea surface. She could see a few ships sailing in the distance, and she was involuntarily captivated. “It’s so beautiful.”
Sebastian walked over, put his arm around the girl’s shoulder, and looked out at the same sea. “Is it a surprise?”
Lilian nodded. “Yes, a wonderful surprise. What made you think to bring me to the beach?”
Sebastian pulled the girl into a hug, his voice low. “Too much has happened lately. I wanted to help you clear your mind, which is helpful for easing tension.” Since the gala, the young woman looked the same as always, but he could sense the sadness in her mood.
Lilian looked up into the man’s eyes, her voice clear. “Thank you, Sebastian.”
“There is no need for thanks between us,” the man whispered in the girl’s ear with his deep voice. “All that matters is that you can be happy.”
Lilian smiled bitterly. “I’m not unhappy, just sorrowful for Grandfather. He spent his entire life pouring all his energy into Philips Corp and the whole Philips family. Yet he never imagined that the son and daughter he raised by his side were plotting against him behind his back, even going mad over mere material wealth. Tell me, was Grandfather’s life a success or a failure?”
Sebastian’s resonant voice was low. “The truth is, everyone lives a life of constant calculation—either you calculate against others, or others calculate against you. It just depends on who is the most experienced. Merrick is undoubtedly successful in his career; he calculated flawlessly. But when it came to family, he gave his family complete trust. He guarded against everyone else, yet he was ultimately betrayed by those closest to him. I can only say he valued his family too highly and forgot that everyone has a selfish and greedy side, including the people he holds dearest.”
Lilian looked at the calm surface of the sea, thinking of her mother’s tragic life. Her voice carried a hint of sorrow. “Yes. The people who hurt you the most are often those closest to you, because you give them your genuine heart, and they treat it like a sharp sword, plunging it right into your chest. How sad.”
Sebastian tightened his arms around the girl. “I will never let you experience having your true feelings betrayed.”
Lilian turned to look at Sebastian, her smile serene. “If I ever get tired, I’ll find a small town by the sea, where I can work when the sun rises and rest when the sun sets, facing the sea with spring blossoming.”
Sebastian said softly, “I’ll go with you.”
In the sunset glow, their two figures, locked in an embrace, stretched endlessly until they disappeared into the light.
When they returned to the city, the streetlights were just coming on.
Sebastian pulled the car up in front of a restaurant. He told Lilian, “Let’s go. I’m taking you to dinner.”
