Merrick’s voice was choked with emotion. “Lilian, it’s my fault. I failed your mother, and I have failed you. Lilian’s voice was low. “Her memory hadn’t fully recovered. She only remembered your faces and a few fragmented scenes; she likely didn’t remember anything else. That’s why she told me in the letter that if I ever met an elderly couple who looked like the people in the painting, I should ask them if they had lost a daughter and tell them she missed them terribly.
