831 The Base Destroyed
George hurried toward the study and threw the door open, his voice thick with panic as he addressed the old man behind the desk. “Father, the base has been exposed. What do I do?” Arlo stood up abruptly, his face a mask of shock. “What did you say? Repeat that.”
“Disaster struck the base. Everyone escaped, including those old scientists I had locked away. Sebastian brought a swarm of media and reporters to the site just as they got out. Everything was caught on camera. Father, how do we handle this?” George asked desperately.
Arlo stared at him in disbelief. “You lost the base? How is that even possible? I warned you a thousand times that the facility was the very foundation of the Mildew family’s survival. How could you let this happen?”
George’s face contorted with rage. “It was that bitch Lillian! I never imagined she would set a fire inside the base to create a distraction and smuggle Leonard and the others out. Now the press knows we were holding those scientists captive. Once the news breaks, we are finished.”
Arlo felt a sudden wave of dizziness and gripped the edge of his desk to steady himself. He fixed George with a piercing glare. “Lillian set a fire? Then tell me what is the current status of the facility?”
George’s eyes darted away, unable to meet his father’s gaze. “It… it was completely leveled. Blown to pieces.”
Arlo’s breath hitched in his throat, and he collapsed back into his chair.
George rushed over to support the old man, his voice tight with anxiety. “Father! Are you alright?” He began rubbing Arlo’s chest to help him breathe.
years
It took several moments for Arlo to recover. He shoved George away, his voice trembling with emotion. “Get out! Get away from me! It’s over. Everything is over. Hundreds of the Mildew legacy, turned to ash. All of it!”
“Father, we don’t have time for this!” George argued. “Our immediate priority is to suppress the media. If we don’t kill those stories before tomorrow morning, there will be nothing left to save.”
“Do you honestly think there is anything left to save?” Arlo demanded. “You know exactly what that base represented. How could you stand by and watch it be destroyed? I gave you strict orders never to store explosives on–site. Did you just ignore me?”
George’s eyes turned cold. “There were no explosives. Lillian synthesized a compound using the chemicals already in the lab. I had no idea she possessed that kind of expertise.”

“You had no idea!” Arlo roared. “What did you know? The Mildew family’s downfall is your handiwork alone. I told you to release that girl, but you refused to listen. Your arrogance has cost us our entire heritage. You swore that man wouldn’t fight us to the end for the sake of a woman, yet here we are. Our stock is in freefall, and the Stint family is on the verge of taking over Mildew Corp. Because of you, my grandchildren are still missing. This entire catastrophe is the result of your hubris! Tell me, what else did you fail to anticipate? Speak!”
George fixed Arlo with a lethal stare. “Fine. It’s on me. But everything I did was for the sake of this family. None of you would have enjoyed such a lavish lifestyle all these years if it weren’t for my hard work. Now that things have gone wrong, you want to pin all the blame on me? Not a chance. If I’m going down, I’m taking every single one of you with me.”
