“There is nothing to envy. She was still dumped by Sebastian, wasn’t she? Maybe it won’t be long before Eric tosses her aside like a pair of worn–out shoes, too. After all, families like theirs have incredibly high standards for a future matriarch. They almost always choose to marry socialites and heiresses who can actually benefit the family legacy.”
The voices in the crowd were a cacophony of envy, jealousy, and pure disdain.
Lilian looked at Cary, a mischievous smile playing on her lips. “A year has passed, Cary, and you haven’t changed a bit. You’re still as passive–aggressive as ever. Why don’t you just speak your mind then? I know you are dying to tell me that even though Sebastian and I were so in love, we still ended up parting ways. You could have summarized that in one sentence, yet you insist on taking the scenic route. It’s honestly quite annoying. At your age, you should be more direct. No wonder you’re losing your hair; you probably spend so much time overthinking that you’ve exhausted all your brain cells, leaving nothing left to grow hair.”
“You!” Cary glared at her, his eyes simmering with rage. “I see a year away hasn’t dulled your sharp tongue. It seems that as long as you have a man backing you up, you think you can be arrogant anywhere. First it was Sebastian, and now it’s this gentleman. I wonder if you’d still be so bold if you didn’t have a man to hide behind.”
Lilian looked at Cary with pure contempt. “How is this being sharp–tongued? I’m just telling the truth. If you can’t handle reality, don’t blame the messenger. Besides, you know I’m an uncultured country girl, right? I’ve always been blunt. I never learned how to flatter people, so you shouldn’t call me names just because you don’t like the facts. And don’t call it arrogance. This is just how I talk. Sebastian used to tell me how much he would spoil me just to get back at petty people. This is just who I am now. I hold nothing back and I will speak this way regardless of their status. Furthermore, my arrogance is nothing compared to your granddaughter’s. She’s famous in overseas high society for being notoriously spoiled and overbearing. Surely you, as her grandfather, are aware of that, right? Come on, I only just arrived, and I hear so much about her outbursts. Oh, don’t get me started on how she’d show up to someone else’s doorstep just to force a marriage proposal. Just how desperate do you have to be? Honestly, I’m impressed.”
Uriel couldn’t help but burst into laughter. She never expected this girl to be so spirited, clever, and quick–witted.
Watching Lilian completely annoy Cary with just a few choice words was incredibly satisfying. Uriel found her quite charming, though she remained curious about the exact nature of the girl’s relationship with Eric.
Sebastian also let out a helpless, subtle smile. He knew that as long as this little girl was around, even the most tedious banquet would become lively. Hearing her say his name with such effortless confidence made him realize just how much he missed her.
