The men looked at Everly and didn’t say a word. They just turned away, their silence speaking volumes.
Lilian caught Everly’s eye with a look of pure mockery. “Why are you so shocked, Everly? You’re the one who called them just friends. And Cary here just admitted you took their money. If you owe someone, you pay them back. It’s common sense, right, Cary?”
Cary stared her down, his expression stone–cold as he forced back his rage. “Lilian is right,” he said through gritted teeth. “It should be returned. Once the gala is over, I’ll make sure Everly settles her debts with them.”
He hadn’t been humiliated like this in years. He’d only crossed paths with Lilian twice, and both times she had completely stripped him of his dignity. Being manipulated by a girl like her made his blood boil, but a dark, twisted smile flickered in his eyes when he thought about his plan for the night. He was going to make her pay.
Lilian turned back to the men and smiled. “You heard the man. Cary just promised everyone here that Everly will pay you back. With so many witnesses, I’m sure a prestigious name like the Chris family wouldn’t dream of backing out. Right, Cary?”
Swallowing his fury, Cary nodded. “Exactly. I keep my word. Now, can they finally leave?”
Lilian gave a sharp, knowing nod. “Sure thing.” She looked at the group of men. “You guys can head out. I’m sure Cary isn’t the type to break a promise in front of a crowd. The Chris family has plenty of assets; they aren’t going to stiff you over a few million. Just make sure to get in touch with Everly after the party. And if she doesn’t pick up, well, you know where they live. They can’t exactly run away, can they?”
“We got it,” one of them said. “Thanks for everything. You really opened our eyes to who she actually is. We won’t be falling for her lies again.”
Lilian smiled. “Don’t mention it. I thought I was helping out a couple in love, but I had no idea Miss Everly’s version of friendship was so… expensive. My bad.”
“It’s not on you. We were just blind.” They’d been played for fools, but as long as they got their money back, they’d take it as a hard- learned lesson.
As they walked out, Everly finally let out a breath of relief. She turned on Lilian, her face twisting with malice. “You found those guys specifically to frame me, didn’t you? I never said half the things they claimed! You coached them, didn’t you?”
Lilian just gave her a cryptic smirk. “I have no idea what you’re talking about, Everly.”
