The words had barely left Everly’s mouth when a sharp, brutal slap sent her head spinning. Cary’s voice followed, and they sounded ice–cold and dangerous. “Are you done making a fool of yourself?”

Everly froze, finally realizing she’d just admitted the whole thing was a setup. She looked at Cary in pure terror. “I… I’m sorry, Grandpa. I wasn’t thinking. I’m just… I’m losing it.”

“Then get it together,” Cary snapped. “Think before you open your mouth. If you can’t keep it shut, I’ll do it for you.”

He turned to the crowd, his voice smoothing over into a fake, polished tone. “Everly is a bit overwhelmed tonight. She’s talking nonsense. I trust no one here is taking her seriously.”

Cary’s damage control didn’t work. Everyone knew people only blurt out the truth like that when they’re backed into a corner. It was obvious now that this engagement was a forced play against the Austins.

It made sense. Why would Sebastian ever touch someone like Everly when he had Lilian?

Cary ignored the whispers and stared Lilian down. “These men are Everly’s friends. Stop twisting the facts and spreading lies. Get them out of here now. If this circus keeps going, nobody wins.”

Lilian let out a sharp, mocking laugh. “You’re unbelievable, Cary. One second they’re friends, and the second before that, Everly was swearing she’d never seen them in her life. Make up your mind. Besides, Everly’s friends are pretty damn generous to be honest. I mean, handing over their family fortunes just to help her out? I’d love to have friends like that.”

Cary sneered. “Just because you don’t have that kind of pull doesn’t mean Everly doesn’t. That’s the difference between real class and a brat from the sticks. No matter what title you’ve managed to grab, you’re still low–class at the end of the day.”

“Is that right?” Lilian’s eyes flashed. “If class means being like Everly, I’ll pass. I was raised to pay my own way. I don’t make a habit of bleeding people dry. I guess that’s just the difference between your family’s nobility and how we do things in Dracovia.”

She turned to the group of men. “Since she says you’re all just friends, then let’s keep it professional. Friends pay back what they owe. Why obsess over her, right? Just have her pay you back and call it even.”

One of the men jumped in immediately. “Works for me! If she pays back the eighty million she took, I’ll treat her like a total stranger and move on.”

“Me too,” another added. “I just want my money back. I must have been blind, but if we’re just friends, there’s no reason for me to keep paying for her lifestyle.”

“Exactly. If it’s just a friendship, then return every cent we put into the Chris family projects.”
