Cary gave a cold laugh. “You really are stupider than I thought. I gave you far too much credit before, but it seems you’re nothing special. You and he are merely engaged; that carries no legal protection whatsoever. Your status as his fiancée is entirely optional. Even if he bypasses you, there won’t be a single problem.”
“Is that so?” With a mocking smile, Lilian walked up to Cary. She spread her fingers and held her hand directly in front of his face. “Do you recognize this ring?”
Cary stared at the intricate, ornate band on the girl’s finger, his eyes widening in shock. “This is…”
Lilian withdrew her hand and studied the ring with a sly grin. “It is the token of the Austin family matriarch, of course. Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten. Sebastian gave this to me personally over a year ago. Tell me, if your granddaughter wants to be the lady of the Austin family, does she or does she not have to get past me? I’ve heard this ring holds an extraordinary status within the family. Without it, do you really think your granddaughter’s title would carry any weight?”
The surrounding guests were stunned. No one had expected Sebastian to have already handed over the Austin family’s matriarchal token to this girl. This meant that if she claimed to be the lady of the house right now, she wouldn’t even be exaggerating. Everyone knew exactly what that ring represented.
Uriel and Derrick were equally astonished. They knew better than anyone the true significance of that piece of jewelry.
It was a symbol of authority within the Austin family. Whoever held that ring could mobilize any branch of their family’s power at will, without needing to provide a single reason.
Cary took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. “Since that’s the case, I suggest you be sensible and hand it over. The two of you are finished; there’s no point in being obsessive and using a ring to obstruct our families‘ alliance. This union is inevitable. Sebastian cannot refuse it. Even with those videos exposed, he will accept her. Whether he wants to or not.”
He never imagined she would have that ring in her possession. Knowing full well the power it wielded within the Austin family, he realized it could not remain in her hands; otherwise, the consequences would be endless.
Lilian sneered. “And you think you have the right to demand it? You are neither its master nor its owner. On what grounds are you asking me to hand it over? I’ve seen shameless people before, but you take the prize. Brazenly demanding something that doesn’t belong to you… it’s pathetic.”
Cary gave Lilian a sinister look before turning his gaze toward the man on the stage. “Do you not intend to take that ring back?” Sebastian’s obsidian eyes flashed with a chilling light. “I have no intention of taking back something I have given away. Since I gave her that ring, it belongs to her. It will belong to her for the rest of her life.”
“It seems you have no intention of looking after Everly then,” Cary’s voice turned deadly cold.
Sebastian chuckled darkly. “You must be joking. How could Miss Everly ever lack for someone to look after her? From what I saw in those videos, those gentlemen were taking excellent care of her”
