Sebastian’s dark eyes flashed with a chilling light as he let out a mocking laugh. “I’d watch that tone if I were you, Everly. Making such wild accusations without a shred of proof is a dangerous game. You claim i leveled your family’s businesses? Where’s the evidence? If you can’t produce a paper trail, I’ll happily see you in court for defamation.”
“Don’t play dumb!” Everly screamed, her face contorted with rage. “Grandpa teamed up with those five families to sabotage your interests in the south and backed you into a corner just to force this engagement. This is your revenge, huh! You’ve wiped out every last asset we own! I just never imagined you could be this heartless! Leaving us with absolutely nothing. Even if you don’t love me, how could you do this? You’re cold–blooded, Sebastian! You’re a monster! I was a fool to waste years of my life loving a man like you!”
Her outburst sent a shockwave through the room. The guests finally saw the truth behind the headlines. The Chris family hadn’t secured a high–profile marriage; they had tried to blackmail their way into it. To everyone, it was a pathetic, desperate move that made the family look incredibly small.
Sebastian’s expression remained stone–cold. “I’ve told you once, facts matter. If you’re going to pin this on me, prove it. Otherwise, shut your mouth. If you keep slandering my name, I won’t hesitate to file suit.”
Everly was past the point of reason, her voice cracking with grief. “Then sue me! Do it! What do I have left to lose? I’m already at rock bottom! I’ll take you down with me if I have to! You’ve destroyed my life and my family. There’s nothing left to fear. Go ahead and sue. I’ll be waiting to see just how much more blood you want to draw!”
Cary fixed Sebastian with a murderous glare. “This was your plan all along, wasn’t it? That’s why you didn’t flinch when you called off the engagement. You knew exactly what was happening to our properties in real–time. You weren’t afraid of my threats because you were already busy burning my world to the ground. An eye for an eye, is that it, Sebastian?”
Sebastian’s lips curled into a smirk. “I have no idea what you’re talking about, Cary. But I do know one thing, anyone who thinks they can threaten me ends up regretting it. You’re no exception. Though I must say, seeing karma hit this fast is even a surprise to
me.”
Cary took a ragged breath, forcing a terrifying calm over himself. “Fine. If you want to play dirty, I’ll play your game! No one is gonna walk away from this unscathed!”
He turned to Will, his voice dropping to a low growl. “Call our men. Tell them to move now. I want the Austin family’s mines leveled within thirty minutes. I don’t care what it costs! Just do it!”
Lilian’s heart skipped a beat, her hand tightening reflexively on Eric’s arm.
Eric looked down at her, sensing her panic, and gave her hand a reassuring squeeze. “Look at you, all worked up over nothing. Sebastian isn’t breaking a sweat, so why should you?”
Lilian looked over at Sebastian. He stood there, perfectly composed, as if the threat of losing his family’s fortune was nothing more than background noise. As if sensing her gaze, he turned toward her. When he saw the worry etched on her face, the icy mask slipped for a split second, replaced by a flash of genuine, tender warmth.
