“See? The man himself isn’t even breaking a sweat, so why are you?” Eric said with a calm smile. “Relax. Your man is a heavyweight, have a little faith. He’s clearly three steps ahead of that old fart. Sebastian doesn’t pick fights he hasn’t already won.”

Lilian felt the knots in her stomach finally start to loosen.

Across the room, Will was frantically dialing, but every call went straight to voicemail. He swapped between half a dozen contacts, but the result was the same. Dead air.

Cary’s patience snapped. “Have you reached them yet? What’s taking so long?”

“I can’t get through!” Will said, panic written all over his face. “I’ve tried every number on the list. No one is picking up.”

“That’s impossible.” Cary snatched the phone out of his hand and began dialing himself. He tore through the contact list, but every single call failed. “This can’t be happening… we had everything settled before I got here. How can they all be off the grid?”

“Maybe there was a misunderstanding?” Will suggested weakly. “Maybe they think you backed out on the deal and decided to cut bait?”

“Not a chance,” Cary snapped. Suddenly, a realization hit him like a physical blow. He turned a murderous gaze toward Sebastian. “It was you, wasn’t it? You found out where they were hiding and had them taken out.”

Sebastian met his gaze with a look of pure, mocking disdain. “You’re giving me too much credit, Cary. Do I look like the kind of man who spends his time ordering hits? But since you mentioned them, you mean the Claria and Aurus families, right? I almost forgot. They actually asked me to pass along a video for you. So much has happened today that it slipped my mind. My apologies.”

He glanced at Foster. “Show the gentleman the video.”

“Of course,” Foster replied, making a quick call on his headset.

Seconds later, the massive screen on the stage flickered to life. An old man appeared, his smile twisted and grim. “Cary, if you’re seeing this, I assume you’ve received our little gift. Shocked? You shouldn’t be. Consider this a receipt for your betrayal. We had a deal to take down the Austins together, but instead, you shipped us off to some godforsaken wasteland while you tried to marry your way into their good graces. To make matters worse, you actually thought you could wipe us out to prove your loyalty to them. Well, if you want to play dirty, let’s see who plays better.”
