Will’s eyes blazed with fury. “If Everly is trash to you, then what am I? I’m her father! Am I just a tool in your eyes too? Yes, you me that power and wealth are everything, but are we supposed to strip ourselves of our very humanity to get them? If that’s the price, then what’s the point of owning the world?”
He scooped Everly’s limp body into his arms and shot his father a look of pure, gut–wrenching disappointment before turning toward the exit.
“Get back here!” Cary bellowed. “Where do you think you’re going? We aren’t finished yet!”
Will froze for a second, but he didn’t turn around. His voice was like ice. “It’s over, Dad. The Chris family is done. We lost this war! Do you really think there’s a plan left to follow? She’s my daughter. If you won’t save her, I will. As for you… you’re on your own.” With that, he walked out without looking back.
Watching his son leave, Cary seemed to age ten years in an instant. But the shock quickly curdled into a manic, toxic rage.
“Fine! Go! All of you, get the hell out!” he shrieked, laughing hysterically. “I don’t need any of you to finish this! I said I’d wipe the Austin family off the face of the earth, and I meant it!”
He whirled on Sebastian, his face contorted. “Are you happy now? Does it feel good to watch me lose everything? I’m in this position because of you! Because of you, I lost my granddaughter and my son. Because of you, my family empire collapsed in a heartbeat. You’re the reason for all of this, so you’re the one who needs to die!”
His crazed eyes then darted to Lilian. “And you, Lilian! If you hadn’t shown up today, none of this would have spiraled out of control. You’re just as guilty!”
He scanned the terrified crowd, his voice reaching a fever pitch. “And the rest of you! You’re all going to burn! Every single one of you!”
Lilian watched Cary’s breakdown with a sinking feeling. Her brow furrowed; she could sense something catastrophic was about to
happen.
Sure enough, Cary reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, black device. He looked at Sebastian with a ghoulish, jagged grin. “Do you know what this is? This is my parting gift to you. I’ve had this entire ballroom rigged with explosives since before the party started.”
The room went deathly silent for a heartbeat before exploding into panicked murmurs. People looked at each other, paralyzed, wondering if the old man was bluffing or if they were standing on a graveyard.
Sebastian’s jaw tightened, his gaze fixed on Cary like a predator.
“The plan was to walk out of here and press this button once I was safe,” Cary continued, his voice dropping to a terrifyingly calm whisper. “I was going to bury all of you. But it’s not too late. I have nothing left anyway. If you won’t let me have my life, then we’re all going down together!”
His thumb lunged for the button. In that split second, Lilian’s hand blurred. A silver needle hissed through the air, piercing Cary’s wrist with surgical precision. The sudden, white–hot pain forced his hand open, and the remote clattered to the floor.
Lilian didn’t hesitate. She lunged forward, sliding across the floor to snatch the device before he could recover.
The crowd let out a collective, ragged breath as they saw the remote in her hands. Even in their terror, they were awestruck; her movements had been a seamless, lethal blur of grace and speed.

Lilian stared at the remote in her hand, her expression grim. “I’m fine. I just don’t know if he managed to trigger it before I got to
him.”
Cary, sprawled on the floor, let out a ragged cough. He scrambled to his feet, swaying slightly, but a triumphant smirk stretched across his face. “It’s no use. You’re already dead. That remote uses fingerprint recognition! The second my thumb touched that pad, the countdown began. The entire ballroom is about to go up in flames. Hahaha! It’s over. Everything ends today. Sebastian, this is what happens when you cross me. I don’t care if I die, as long as I’m taking the entire Austin family to the grave with me. It’s a bargain!” He threw his head back and laughed, a sound that chilled the bone.
The room erupted into absolute chaos. Screams tore through the air as guests trampled over one another to reach the exits. People tripped and fell, but no one stopped to help; in the face of certain death, it was every man for himself.
Yet, a few stayed behind. Mostly those who figured that if the Austins weren’t running, there might still be a chance. Besides, a spectacle this high–stakes was a once–in–a–lifetime event.
Cary watched the panicked exodus with sadistic delight. “Run all you want! It won’t matter! This charge is powerful enough to level everything within a five–kilometer radius. There is nowhere to hide!”
Lilian’s heart hammered against her ribs. She looked at Sebastian, her eyes wide. “What do we do? Sebastian, how do we stop this?”
Sebastian squeezed her hand, his voice steady. “Stay calm. I’ve got this.” He pulled out his phone and quickly dialed a number.
Lilian turned her icy gaze back to Cary. She stepped toward him, her voice dropping to a low, dangerous hiss. “Where is it? Where did you hide the bomb? Are you really so eager to die?”
Cary met her stare with eyes full of cold malice. “Why not? I’m an old man. I’ve lived my life, tasted every luxury, seen it all. I have zero regrets. And getting to take the head of the Austin family with me? That’s the best retirement plan I could ask for.”
“They say the sins of the father fall on the son,” Lilian said, her voice cutting through his laughter. “You might not care about your own life, but you still have a son out there. Do you really want your final act to ensure his life is a living hell?”
Cary flinched for a fraction of a second, but the cold smirk quickly returned. “Then that’s just his bad luck for being born a Chris. If you’re born into this family, you suffer with the family. Besides, he made it clear he doesn’t give a damn about me, so why should I care about him? He’s just like his useless daughter, ungrateful and soft. I spent years molding him, and he still clings to those pathetic, ‘moral‘ delusions. He was never meant for greatness.”
Lilian’s blood boiled. “Is that so? You’re so brilliant, so great, yet you managed to lead the Chris family straight into the dirt. Doesn’t that make you the biggest failure of them all? Your family was thriving until you dragged them into this abyss. Your son and granddaughter are miserable because of you. Their greatest tragedy wasn’t losing their wealth; it was being related to you. Even now, facing death, you can’t take an ounce of responsibility. You’re a plague, Cary. You ruined your family, your son, and your granddaughter. You aren’t a man! You’re a monster.”
