“Shut up!” Cary shrieked. “They were incompetent! All of them! If they had a shred of use, the Chris family wouldn’t be in this position. And as for you! if Sebastian hadn’t been so ruthless, if you hadn’t come out of nowhere to ruin everything, we wouldn’t be here. You are the culprits. But it doesn’t matter now. None of you are getting away. You’re all going to die!”
Lilian looked at the manic old man and felt a wave of genuine pity. He was a hollow shell, rotting from the inside out.
Suddenly, the ballroom doors were thrown open. A team of tactical officers in full gear stormed in, their presence ratcheting the tension in the room to a breaking point.
Foster hurried over to Sebastian. “Sir, the tactical team is here, but the bomb squad and disposal experts are still stuck in transit.” These men had been positioned nearby as a precaution, but they weren’t the specialists needed for this specific threat.
Sebastian’s jaw tightened. “Sweep the ballroom. Find that device. Now!”
Cary leaned heavily on his opulent cane and limped toward Sebastian, a twisted smirk on his face. “It’s no use. There are only five minutes left. Even if you find it now, you’ll never have the time to disarm it.”
Sebastian ignored him, his eyes like flint as he looked at Foster. “Find it.”
“Search every inch!” Foster barked at his men. “Don’t miss a single corner!” The team fanned out immediately, moving with practiced efficiency.
Cary let out a mocking laugh. “I don’t care how powerful you think you are, Sebastian. You’re finished. You’ll never find where I hid it. Today is the day you die! Hahaha!”
Sebastian’s dark eyes were cold and vacant. “Whether we find it or not isn’t your concern. You should focus on how you’re going to spend the rest of your life. Every word you’ve said has already been transmitted to the authorities. They’ll be here any minute.”
Cary’s expression darkened. “Is that so? Then we’ll just have to see who lasts longer.”
Nearby, Uriel gripped Derrick’s arm so hard her knuckles turned white. “What do we do? What’s going to happen?”
Derrick patted her hand, though his own expression was grim. “Stay calm. We have to trust Sebastian. He always finds a way out.”
Martha was shaking as she held onto Janet. “Janet, maybe we should run. We should get as far away as possible! At least then we’d have a chance! If he doesn’t find the bomb, we’re all dead!”
Janet remained strangely composed, “Didn’t you hear the old man? He said there’s nowhere to hide. If that’s the case, we might as well stay put. Besides, I don’t think Sebastian is the type to go down this easily.”
Martha fell silent, though her heart continued to race with terror.
Eric stepped up to Lilian. “You should go. Right now. I know you’re capable enough to get clear of the blast zone. Whatever happens here, I can’t let anything happen to you. Grandpa wouldn’t survive losing you.”
Sebastian turned to her as well, his voice softening but firm. “Lilian, go with Eric. Get to the Philips estate and wait for me there. As soon as I’ve handled this, I’ll come for you. Please.”
Lilian’s gaze was icy. “My safety isn’t your concern. Focus on the bomb.”
Sebastian grabbed her shoulders, forcing her to look him in the eye. “Lilian, this isn’t the time to be stubborn. I can take risks, but
