Sebastian looked at her red–rimmed eyes, his heart aching with regret. He let out a helpless sigh and gently pulled her into his arms. “Lilian, I’m so sorry. It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have kept you in the dark and put you through all this. I failed to protect you; instead, I let you exhaust yourself worrying over me. I’m sorry. Please, can you forgive me?”

The moment she heard those words, Lilian’s tears finally spilled over. she hammered her fists against his chest. “I won’t forgive you! I’ll never forgive you! I hate you, Sebastian! I hate you! How could you break your promise? We said we’d be honest with each other, but you hid everything from me. If I hadn’t heard the news from someone else, were you just going to keep me in the dark forever? I would’ve been the last person on earth to find out you were engaged to Everly!”

Sebastian stroked her hair, his voice tight with pain. “I was never going to marry her. I didn’t tell you because I knew you’d drop everything and come running. Cary was closing in, and the danger was everywhere. How could I let you walk into a trap? You know that seeing you hurt is the one thing I can’t handle. Do you really think I had the courage to tell you?”

Lilian pushed him away, her face streaked with tears. “That’s still no excuse to lie! Do you have any idea how worried I was? I called you so many times, and you wouldn’t even pick up! Then Everly answers your phone and tells me she’s your fiancée! She told me to stay away from you! Do you know how much that hurt? Try putting yourself in my shoes for once. If I were in danger and kept you in the dark, how would you feel?”

The guilt Sebastian felt was beyond words. Ignoring her resistance, he pulled her back into a firm embrace. “I’m so sorry, Lilian. I was wrong. I thought shielding you from the mess was the right choice, but I never considered your perspective. I was selfish. I didn’t answer those calls because I didn’t know how to explain it without lying to you, so I avoided it altogether. I never realized my silence would cause you even more pain. Please, forgive me.”

He had no idea Everly had actually intercepted her call that day in his office. Just imagining the look on Lilian’s face when she heard those words made his heart stop.

Lilian pulled back slightly, her eyes still red and brimming with resentment. “You really want me to forgive you?” she choked out.

Sebastian met her gaze with absolute sincerity. “Yes. I’ll do anything you ask. Just say the word.”

Lilian took a long, shaky breath and wiped her eyes. “Fine. Since you put it that way, I’ll think about it. I’ll let you know what your penance is when I’ve decided. But until then, I don’t want to see your face.”

She turned toward Eric. “Let’s go, Eric. I’m exhausted. Let’s go home.” She started walking toward the exit without a backward glance.

Sebastian started to move after her, but she spun around instantly. “Remember what you just said. You’ll do anything.” Then, she turned and disappeared into the night.
