Sebastian watched her act like she held every bit of the moral high ground, a fond, indulgent smile touching his lips. “Fine, it’s all on me. I shouldn’t have let Everly get close, and I definitely shouldn’t have kept you in the dark. I am officially and sincerely at your mercy. Better?”
“That’s more like it,” Lilian said, shooting him a sharp, playful look.
Sebastian leaned in, testing the waters. “So… am I finally out of the doghouse?”
Lilian’s expression turned mischievous. “I never said that. If I let you off the hook this easily, I’d lose all my leverage. Consider yourself on probation. One more strike and you’re done.”
“I’m done, huh?” Sebastian’s gaze darkened with a predatory spark. “In that case, let’s see exactly how you plan to keep me in line.” Before she could protest, he pulled her back into his arms.
By the time they finally made it downstairs, it was already noon.
Eric was waiting in the lounge. He took one look at them walking hand–in–hand and let out a dry chuckle. “Wow, that was fast. Lilian, you’re an embarrassment to our family. I thought you’d at least hold out for a couple of weeks, but you let him fix things in a single morning? I guess the rumors are true. Love really does tank your IQ. Even you aren’t immune to it.”
Lilian shot Eric an annoyed look as she reached the bottom of the stairs. “You’ve got a lot of nerve. If you hadn’t gone behind my back and let him in, I wouldn’t have had to deal with him so soon. This is on you, Eric. I haven’t even settled my score with you yet, and here you are lecturing me.”
Eric laughed. “Hey, don’t pin this on me. Look at who your fiancé is. You think I could actually keep Sebastian out if he didn’t want to stay out? Besides, the man showed up in the middle of the night armed with apologies and guarantees. If I’d kept playing the heavy, I would’ve been the jerk. Give me a break.”
“So you just got touched by his sincerity and sold me out?” Lilian snapped. “Nice move, Eric. Who was it last night telling me I had to teach him a real lesson? You barely got the words out before you threw them out the window. You specifically said you wouldn’t side against family, so tell me, what do you call this?”
Eric looked at Sebastian, pleading for backup. “Sebastian, I did all this for you. You can’t just leave me to drown here, or next time you’re on your own.”
