Sebastian looked at her with a raw, aching intensity as he reached out to smooth her sleep–muddled hair. “Lilian, I messed up,” he said, his voice dropping to a low murmur. “The whole thing is on me. I shouldn’t have kept you in the dark, and I sure as hell shouldn’t have let those headlines with Everly spiral. Hit me, scream at me…I’ll take whatever you’ve got. Just don’t shut me out. Your silence is the one thing I can’t handle. It hurts more than any punishment you could ever dream up. So, please… just forgive
me.”
Lilian looked at him, her eyes still clouded with resentment. “If things get dangerous again, are you going to hide it from me?”
Sebastian let out a long, weary sigh and pulled her into his arms. “How am I supposed to answer that? I kept it from you because I didn’t want you losing sleep, and I definitely didn’t want you in the line of fire. If I tell you everything, am I just supposed to watch you dive headfirst into danger alongside me? You know seeing you get hurt is the one thing that breaks me.”
“But we promised to do this together,” Lilian whispered against his chest. “Life is a long road. If you hide every burden and try to carry everything yourself… what happens if you’re in real trouble one day and I’m the last to know? Am I supposed to just stand by and watch you fall because I didn’t know you needed help?”
“I’m sorry,” he murmured, his deep voice vibrating through her. “I was being selfish. I thought keeping you behind a shield was the right move, but I didn’t realize it would only make you more anxious. I promise: from now on, no matter what happens, I’ll tell you. No more secrets. But you have to promise me something, too. Don’t ever go charging into a hornet’s nest for me like you did this time. Do you hear me?”
Lilian pulled back slightly, her gaze searching his. “You found out?”
Sebastian’s voice cracked with raw heartache. “I know everything. When I found out you actually went undercover at the Chris estate to dig for intel… I’ve never hated myself more. I hated that I didn’t just tell you the truth. If I’d been honest, you wouldn’t have had to put your life on the line like that.”
Lilian tilted her head, a familiar spark of mischief returning to her eyes. “Oh, stop. I’d never put myself in a spot I couldn’t get out of Don’t believe everything Eric tells you; he probably played up the drama just to make you feel guilty. It wasn’t nearly as high–stakes as he made it sound. Besides, I had my own reasons for going. Everly had the nerve to act like she was your fiancée and told me to stay away from you. I couldn’t let that slide without a little payback, so I mostly went there to deliver her a gift.”
Sebastian looked at her playful expression and shook his head, a mix of relief and exhaustion. “You… I don’t know what I’m going to do with you. That estate was a fortress. If you’d been caught, Cary wouldn’t have thought twice about ending you. I know you can take care of yourself, but you were outnumbered. If something had happened, did you want me to spend the rest of my life in regret?”
