Rowan watched the fury building behind Robert’s eyes and kept his voice low, testing the waters. “Grandpa, I don’t think anyone outside the Soren family could have leaked this. We’ve held that land for decades; we’re the only ones who know it inside and out. And with the board’s recent ultimatum, I can only assume…”
Robert’s gaze snapped to him, cold and sharp. “Don’t play word games with me. If you think Janus did it, say it. Don’t try to manipulate me. I can respect a man using underhanded tactics to climb the ladder, but leave that garbage at the door when you’re talking to me.”
Rowan flinched. “Yes, Grandpa. I’m sorry.”
Robert stared into space, his mind racing through the fallout. “Get in touch with Skyreach Group immediately. We can’t sit on this anymore. Now that the story is out, Skyreach must be panicking. If you move now, you might actually be able to snatch that land back while they’re desperate. Before they figure out what’s actually buried down there, that plot is nothing but a massive liability
to them.”
Rowan didn’t know what secret his grandfather was referring to, but he didn’t dare ask. “I’m on it,” he said, quickly retreating from the study.
Once the door closed, Robert looked back at the newspaper, his face darkening with every passing second. “Idiots,” he hissed. “Absolute idiots.”
Across town, Janus was feeling far more smug. He had no idea that his little scheme had accidentally exposed the very secret Robert had spent years protecting. To him, it was just a perfect trap.
He leaned back on his sofa, looking over the front–page headlines with a predatory smile. “What’s the word from Skyreach?”
“Radio silence,” his assistant reported. “Reporters have been camping out for hours, but the company hasn’t issued a single word in response.”
Janus tossed the paper onto the coffee table. “Our mystery Chairman has a steel spine, I’ll give them that. But if a project that size goes belly–up, Skyreach is as good as dead.”
“What’s our next move?”
Janus let out a dry, cold laugh. “We turn up the heat. Make sure this story stays at the top of every feed. And call Ryan at Skyreach again. If they didn’t want my help when things were good, let’s see how they feel about a lifeline now that they’re drowning.”
Lilian didn’t touch down in Dracovia until five in the evening. She’d planned to head straight to the office, but Sebastian had other ideas, driving her directly back to the villa. He wasn’t taking no for an answer; she’d been traveling for over ten hours and looked like she was running on fumes.
