Sebastian pulled her close, his hand resting firmly on her shoulder. “Don’t worry. No matter what that old fox is planning, he’s no match for you. Get some sleep. I’ve already got Unno digging; we’ll know exactly who leaked that story by morning.”
Lilian finally gave in, the exhaustion winning out.
Once he was sure she was asleep, Sebastian stepped out and headed to his study, where Unno was already waiting by the door.
‘What do we have?” Sebastian asked, taking his seat behind the desk.
Jnno placed a folder in front of him. “Here’s the latest. We’ve confirmed the leak came from Janus.”
Sebastian let out a cold, sharp laugh. “Janus. I have to give him credit for consistency. It’s always the same tired tricks.” He flipped through the file, but stopped short at a specific page. “Hydrogen sulfide?”
“Yes,” Unno said. “There’s a sizable drainage ditch near the center of the plot. The reports claim it’s contaminated with hydrogen sulfide. If that’s true, it’s a death sentence for the project. The gas is lethal, and if it’s as bad as they say, that entire plot of land is effectively worthless.”
Sebastian’s brow furrowed. “Is there any actual proof?”
“Nothing concrete yet,” Unno replied. “But Ryan has already sent samples out for testing. We should have the results soon.”
Sebastian tapped the folder against the desk, his eyes narrowing. “Robert doesn’t do anything without a reason. If Janus knows about this, then Robert definitely does, too. If the land is truly toxic and useless, why is he breaking his neck trying to get it back? It doesn’t add up. There has to be a secret buried on that property that we aren’t seeing yet.”
“Should I start digging into the Soren family’s internal records?”
Sebastian went silent for a moment, lost in thought. “No. If there’s a secret this big, Robert is likely the only one who knows the full story. You won’t get anything out of the rest of them. If the answer is on that land, that’s where we focus the investigation.”
“Got it,” Unno said, turning to leave.
Sebastian stood and walked to the floor–to–ceiling window. He stared out at the dark, silent night, a predatory glint in his eyes.
By the next morning, the media frenzy had reached a fever pitch. New reports were surfacing every hour, some even claiming that the entire subsurface of the Skyreach plot had been eroded by toxic chemical gases.
In the dining room, Lilian stared at the documents in front of her, her breakfast forgotten. “Hydrogen sulfide? That’s impassible. There’s no way that land contains those kinds of chemicals.”
She remembered that plot clearly. In her past life, it didn’t just get developed. It became the most valuable piece of real estate in all of Kingston. Something was very, very wrong here.
Sebastian calmly spread jam on a piece of toast and set it on her plate. He slid the documents out of her hands and took a wet wipe to clean her fingers. “You sound pretty certain about that.”
“I am,” Lilian said, her voice steady and absolute. “I know that land. In my previous life, it was the crown jewel of Kingston’s market. I’m telling you, there is no toxic waste there. Not a chance.”
