Henry let out a bitter laugh. “My daughter? You think she’d even admit to that? She’s never seen me as her father. What right do I have to demand anything from her? Besides, this is business. Getting wiped out just means I wasn’t good enough. I can’t blame anyone else for that.”
He’d spent the last few days spiraling, and the initial rage had started to settle into a cold reality. He was the one who tried to steal her formulas. He was the one who tried to sabotage her supply chain. If he was willing to play that dirty, he couldn’t complain when she set a trap he was too stupid to see.
Lilian might have pulled the trigger on the bankruptcy, but he’d built the house of cards himself. If he hadn’t treated Catherine the way he did, or brought Vivian into their lives, Catherine would still be alive and Lilian wouldn’t have been discarded like trash.
He was getting exactly what he deserved. Lilian was just settling the score for her mother, and he had no right to stand in her way. The resentment was draining out of him, replaced by a hollow exhaustion. Like his father said, the cycle of revenge had to stop somewhere. Even if she never acknowledged him, she was still his daughter. Losing the company was the only penance he could actually pay.
Chloe looked at him, disgusted by the lack of fight. “So that’s it? You’re just going to sit back and let her have everything?”
Henry pulled the blanket over his head. “It doesn’t matter. I’m tired of the games. I have a roof over my head and enough to drink. That’s plenty.”
Chloe took a sharp breath. “Fine. If you want to be pathetic, go ahead. But I’m not done. That company was supposed to be mine, and I’m not letting Lilian walk away with it.”
She turned and stormed out, nearly tripping over a bottle in her haste. She kicked it across the room with a curse before slamming the door behind her.
Under the covers, Henry flinched at the sound but didn’t move. He knew he wasn’t built for this world. Even if he’d kept the company, he probably would have lost it eventually. What difference did it make if she took it now?
Lilian was already being torn apart in the headlines. He’d failed her for eighteen years; he couldn’t bring himself to pile on now. He owed her a debt he could never pay back, so he had no business asking for the company back.
