The room was a mess of whispers. People were finally putting the pieces together. The fact that Henry’s second wife had essentially murdered the first and trafficked the child wasn’t a secret to everyone, just something that had been buried. The sympathy in the room was starting to shift.
But the guy in the beige vest wouldn’t let it go. “Still,” he pressed, “he’s your father. He’s the reason you’re even in this world. Don’t you feel any obligation to show him some level of respect?”
Lilian looked him dead in the eye. “I’m not a martyr. I don’t feel obligated to a man who ruined my mother’s life. If it wasn’t for him, she’d be alive. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t have been sold. If it wasn’t for him, her grave wouldn’t have been dug up and desecrated. So you tell me, what exactly am I supposed to be grateful for?”
The reporter had no comeback. He sat down, looking like he wanted to disappear into the floor.
Watching the livestream at home, Henry felt like he’d been hit by a truck. Every word she said was a slap in the face. It was all true. He was the reason for everything.
Morgan looked at his son’s shattered expression. “It’s over, Henry. Don’t drown in the past. At least the fact that you feel this proves you still have a conscience.”
“If I hadn’t met Vivian,” Henry whispered, “if I’d just stayed with Catherine, she wouldn’t hate me like this.”
“Life doesn’t give you a rewind button,” Morgan said. “If you want to do right by her now, the best thing you can do is stay away. Let her move on without you being a constant reminder of the pain.”
Back at the conference, the doors were suddenly thrown open. A group of people marched in, ignoring the staff trying to block
them.
Lilian’s secretary ran in behind them, looking panicked. “Ms. Lílian, I’m so sorry. They just pushed past us. We couldn’t hold them back.”
Lilian waved her off. “It’s fine. Go back to work.” She turned her attention to the man in the lead. “I don’t remember inviting you, Rowan. What do you want?”
Rowan let out a sharp laugh. “A Skyreach press conference? I couldn’t miss a show like this. I brought a few guests I thought you might want to catch up with.”
Lilian looked at the people standing with him. “You really went to a lot of trouble to scrape the bottom of the barrel t can’t wait to see what kind of stunt you’re trying to pull”
