Chapter 101 A logistics specialist and expert survivalist

Danielle buried her face in Ryan’s shoulder, her voice breaking as she began to cry. “The house next door… it was Brett and Candace. Something went completely wrong. Brett just went crazy and turned on her. He attacked her right in their kitchen.”

She took a shaky breath, looking at Joanna’s armed figure before continuing. “Candace managed to break away and run into the other neighbor’s house, but she looked rough. She was bleeding heavily. Brett ran out into the streets after that. We haven’t seen him since, but I could hear Candace’s crying from here.”

Danielle wiped a tear from her cheek, her maternal instincts kicking into overdrive as she gestured toward three heavy suitcases sitting by the entryway. “I was so scared, Ryan. I packed our bags already. I didn’t know) what else to do. I was actually getting ready to leave and come looking for you the second I got your tex message.”

After a quick round of introductions, Joanna cut straight through the lingering panic. “Get your family packed up, Ryan. Fast,” she commanded, her tone crisp and practical. “And give me the keys to the other vehicle.”

Ryan didn’t hesitate. He pulled a heavy key fob from the kitchen counter and handed it over, while Danielle and young Josiah instantly sprang into action. The family moved with surprising efficiency. Instead of panicking, they raided their own pantry, systematically clearing out canned goods, dry rations, and bottled water, loading everything directly into the custom vehicle parked in the oversized garage.

Following them out to the staging area, Joanna stood back and appraised the machine. She found herself genuinely impressed.

It wasn’t just a standard motorhome. The prototype wilderness RV was a masterpiece of off-road engineering. It sat high on reinforced tactical axles with massive, deep-tread terrain tires. The exterior was wrapped in a matte-charcoal, scratch-resistant armored plating, and heavy steel brush guards protected the front grille and windshield. Rooftop solar panels lined the reinforced top deck, and a heavy-duty snorkel intake rose up the side of the cab, ensuring the engine could breathe through deep water or heavy dust. It was rugged, compact, and perfectly designed to navigate a broken world without relying on paved highways.

Ryan wasn’t exaggerating, Joanna thought, a rare spark of satisfaction gleaming in her eyes as she watched the family secure the final latches on the reinforced storage bays. These campers could fit ten people each and they looked built for every tough situation.

While Ryan, Danielle, and Josiah were back inside the house grabbing the last of their personal belongings, Joanna seized her window of opportunity. Stepping over to the second prototype camper parked in the shadows of the driveway, she extended her hand. With a silent flash of her storage space ability, the massive, heavily modified off-road vehicle vanished completely into her pocket dimension. The driveway was left totally bare, as if the machine had never existed.

By the time the family emerged from the front door and locked up for the final time, Joanna was already sitting back in the driver’s seat of the utility truck, its engine purring quietly in the dark cul-de-sac.

Ryan climbed up into the high cab of his newly loaded armored RV, turning the ignition. The powerful engine roared to life with a deep, confident rumble. Danielle sat beside him, holding young Josiah tight as they prepared to leave their suburban life behind forever.

Joanna slammed the truck into gear and pulled out of the cul-de-sac first, with Ryan’s rugged camper falling

return journey to the team’s home base was an exhausting, nerve-wracking crawl. Because the night ha fully set in, the roads were significantly more treacherous than before. The headlights of the truck cut through a bleak landscape of abandoned cars, smoking wreckage, and growing groups of the infected wandering the main corridors. Joanna had to take a highly winding, indirect route, utilizing narrow alleys, driving over curbs, and cutting through empty commercial parking lots to keep the massive RV from getting stuck or surrounded.

It took an hour and a half of intense, hyper-vigilant navigating, but the dark silhouette of the apartment complex finally loomed ahead. As Joanna pulled the truck on the side of the street, she saw the team watching her from the second floor window.

Joanna parked the truck on the side street just outside the complex. Stepping out into the cool night air, she met her core team as they emerged from the dark courtyard.

“They’re with us,” Joanna said briefly, gesturing to the idling RV. “The father is a logistics specialist and expert survivalist. They’ll take the vacant ground-floor unit. Jolie, come out and introduce them to the team upstairs first, then help them settle in.”

While Jolie greeted Ryan, Danielle, and young Josiah, Joanna slipped into the empty downstairs apartment. Moving through the dark rooms, she used her storage space to instantly furnish the unit. A dining table, sofa, and chairs materialized in the living area. In the bedrooms, she laid down heavy frames, thick mattresses, and the soft bedding from the Bed Mart. Finally, she stocked the kitchen with essential pots, pans, and utensils.

Jake and Allen soon arrived, escorting the family inside. The two men helped Ryan unload suitcases, pantry stock, and personal gear from the camper, carrying everything into the newly furnished rooms.

Danielle stared at the fully equipped home in absolute shock, tearing up with relief. Ryan looked at Joanna, his respect for her capabilities deepening. After quickly explaining the unit’s reinforced security system and window locks, Joanna gave a final nod.

“Get some rest,” she said simply.

Leaving the ground-floor unit, Joanna and Jake walked up the concrete stairwell together, their boots echoing in the quiet night as they headed upstairs to debrief with the rest of the crew.
