Chapter 104 Killing zombies is not that hard once you get the hang of it
Amurmur of awe rippled through the room as the team passed the crystals around. RJ looked amazed, holding her core to the light. “How did you get these? Did you harvest them by hand?”
With a fluid flick of her wrist, Joanna snatched the core out of RJ’s hand, making it vanish and rematerialize in her own palm.
“I’ve been practicing mastering my space,” Joanna explained. “Any dead zombie within a thousand square feet, I can automatically search. Not every zombie has one, but many do. It saves me from digging them ou manually.”
Julian’s eyes widened. “So while we were running over zombies last night, you were actively pulling these out?”
“Exactly,” Joanna nodded. “But absorbing them is hard to master. I’ve never done it before, but I remember an ability user in my dream explaining how. You need one hundred level-one cores to get to level two, and one hundred level-two cores to reach level three. All of these are only level one.”
She gestured to the bag. “My automatic search only works within my range. If you are away from me, like today, any zombies you kill will have these cores at the base of the skull. You can grab them from there. For now, stick to the schedule. Jolie, Julian, Allen, Jake, and Rachel-get to the RV and meet Ryan’s family. Nate, Raven, get that laundry started before the power fails. Let’s move.”
The apartment emptied out as the scavenging team filed downstairs. Only Titan, Raven, and Uncle Nate stayed behind with Joanna. Uncle Nate stared intently at the level-one crystal in his hand, then looked up at her. “Why don’t you try to absorb one right now? That way, if any of us unlock abilities later, you’ll already know the process and can help guide us through it.”
Joanna shrugged, considering his logic. “Okay, I can give it a shot.”
She picked up a smooth, oval core from the pouch and closed her eyes. Wrapping her fingers tightly around the stone, she focused her mind, channeling her inner energy toward her palm. At first, nothing happened. The crystal remained cold against her skin.
Then, she remembered the instructions from her dream. She altered the frequency of her energy, pulling inward instead of pushing out.
Slowly, the crystal began to vibrate. A faint, icy blue glow seeped through the cracks of her fingers. The core started to soften, dissolving into a pure liquid light that poured straight into her pores. A sudden, sharp jolt of raw energy surged up her arm, making her gasp as it integrated into her system.
When she opened her eyes, her palm was empty. A fine gray powder drifted to the floor, all that remained of the level-one core.
“Wow,” Raven whispered, leaning forward. “Did it work? Did your space grow?”
Joanna flexed her fingers, feeling a steady, physical warmth settle deep into her muscles. “No, it didn’t affect my pocket dimension at all. Only the jewels can upgrade my space. But these cores… they target my physical body. I can feel my base strength increasing already. It’s a slow process, but it works. I’ll get to work on that jewelry next while you two start the laundry. I will save the cores when I get a hundred.”
Joanna waited until Nate and Raven left before turning to the velvet box of jewelry. She poured a tall glass of

water, knowing from experience that taking it slow and staying hydrated would prevent any strain. Picking up a sapphire platinum ring, she pushed her awareness outward. The gem flared with violet light, liquefying
a mist before vanishing. Taking a deliberate sip of water, Joanna smiled with deep satisfaction as her Storage space seem to shake and shimmer in happiness. She picked up another and kept going.
Downstairs, the RV rumbled to life. Julian navigated the abandoned streets, driving Ryan and Danielle toward a nearby convenience store for supplics. Sensing the pair’s anxiety, Jolie offered an encouraging smile. “Don’t worry you two, killing zombies is not that hard once you get the hang of it.”
Allen chimed in with a grin, “Yeah, and if you’re lucky, you might even get a zombie core out of it.”
Julian glanced in the rearview mirror, his face serious. “Just remember to check the base of the skull after you kill them. Joanna needs those cores.”
They pulled up to the convenience store half an hour later. Before they could dismount, five bloodied figures stumbled out from the side alley, their pale eyes locking onto the RV.
“Zombies! Three o’clock!” Allen yelled, pulling out a shovel. “Securing the perimeter. Let’s move!”
Adrenaline surged through the team as they sprang into action. Jolie and Rachel led the charge, confidently engaging one zombie each with swift, practiced strikes. Ryan and Danielle, though trembling with nerves, knew their survival was on the line; they gritted their teeth and stepped up together to attack a third creature. Nearby, Jake and Allen executed a flawless team move-Jake swept the zombie’s feet out from under it, and Allen immediately brought his shovel down to finish it.
