HOA!” Julian-gasped, staring down at his smoking palms. “I think I awakened my ability! Finally!”

The rest of the team stood frozen, staring in absolute amazement at the smoking corpse and Julian’s glowing hands. The heavy silence lasted only a moment before Allen broke it, a sharp grin spreading across his face. “Well, look at you, Sparky,” Allen joked sarcastically, leaning on his shovel. “Next time the power goes out, we know who we’re plugging the appliances into.”

Jolie stepped up next, patting Julian firmly on the shoulder. “That was amazing, Captain Crispy!” she cheered.

The whole team burst out laughing, the heavy tension instantly evaporating. Rachel examined the faint static still crackling around Julian’s fingertips, while Ryan and Danielle looked on with newfound awe and hope.

Jake smiled at the banter but quickly glanced around the empty street, his expression turning serious. “Let’s hurry and get inside the store before more show up,” he urged, gesturing toward the entrance.

Julian, still riding the high of his new power, puffed out his chest with an arrogant smirk. “Wait,” he ordered proudly, stopping the group in their tracks. “Search for cores first.”

While Jake and Julian knelt over the fallen dead to dig out the cores, the rest of the team walked up to the convenience store’s glass door. Jolie pulled on the handle, but it was locked tight from the inside.

Standing right on the other side of the glass were a heavy-set woman and a heavy-set man. They glared out at the group with pure anger.

“Closed!” the man shouted through the glass, waving them away. “Now get out of here. We aren’t opening this door with creatures everywhere!”

Jolie frowned, looking past them at the familiar shelves. She had been here before the world fell apart and distinctly remembered meeting the owner. It was a kind old man named Clay who ran the place.

Narrowing her eyes, Jolie tapped on the glass. “Who are you?”

“We are the owners, and we are closed, so you have to leave!” the woman snapped back defiantly.

But Jolie’s eyes drifted past the angry couple. Standing deeper in the store’s shadows was another person-a younger man covered in grime with badly torn clothes. His eyes darted frantically around the room, his entire posture visibly nervous and on edge.

A chorus of ragged groans echoed down the street as another group of zombies emerged from around the block. There were easily ten of them, moving with terrifying speed toward the RV and the storefront.

Panicking, Rachel slammed her palms against the glass door. “Let us in! We need supplies, and there are more coming!”

The heavy-set couple inside only sneered, refusing to unlock the latch. “Get out of here or we will watch you get eaten by those things,” the man barked, a sick smile touching his lips.

Behind them, Jake and Julian sprinted across the pavement to rejoin the group, their hands slick with dark blood as they held four newly harvested zombie cores. Seeing the incoming horde, Julian gripped his

weapons tightly, the faint scent of smoke clinging to his clothes.

ore zombies coming in!” Jake yelled, skidding to a halt by the door and looking at the locked glass. “What’s going on?!”

“They are right on us!” Rachel screamed, pointing at the closing gap as the horde of ten zombies swarmed closer.

“Open the damn door, or we will smash this glass to pieces!” Julian threatened, his eyes blazing with arrogance and anger as he glared at the couple. “If we have to fight out here, we’ll make sure the zombies have a wide-open path straight inside to eat you two first!”

Allen raised his heavy shovel, ready to swing. “He’s not bluffing! Unlock it now, or you’re coming down with us!”

The heavy-set couple’s smug sneers instantly vanished, replaced by sheer panic as they looked from Julian’s intense fury to Allen’s raised weapon. Fearing the glass would shatter and bring the monsters right to them, the woman cursed loudly, angrily fumbling with the deadbolt. She flipped the latch and threw the door open. “Fine! Get in, get in!” she shrieked, backing away in a rage.

The team scrambled inside, Jake slamming the heavy glass door shut just as the first zombie slammed its bloodied face against the outside of the pane.

Before anyone could draw a breath, the nervous, grime-covered young man suddenly lunged forward. With surprising speed, he grabbed Danielle from behind, pulling her flush against his chest to use her as a human shield while pressing a sharp machete tightly up to her neck.
