ok around quickly, but we need to hurry,” Joanna called out. “Danielle is downstairs cooking lunch right now and we can’t keep them waiting.”
Everyone agreed to soak in the new hot spring later when they had more time. Instead, they quickly ran over to the villa inside her space to use the showers. They rapidly washed away the grime of the day, feeling completely refreshed as the clean water rinsed off the post-apocalyptic dust.
Clean and energized, Joanna pulled everyone back out of the dimension and headed straight downstairs eager to share a hot meal with Ryan, Danielle, and their family.
As the group headed out the door, Rachel quietly caught Joanna’s sleeve. “Hey, can I talk to you for just a minute?”
Joanna paused, nodding, and called out to the others to head downstairs without them. Once the hallway cleared, Rachel took a breath, her expression serious.
“I wanted to share what actually happened at the convenience store,” Rachel began, her voice low. “When that young man held the machete to Danielle, Jolie and I were trying to talk him down. I kept my eyes locked on his, just trying to calm him. Joanna… it worked too well. As I kept talking, his grip completely faltered, and he slowly started moving the blade away from her neck. He was completely hyper-focused on me, like he couldn’t look away.”
Rachel rubbed her arms, a look of profound realization on her face. “Nobody else noticed because Jake lunged in right then to disarm him, which triggered all that chaos with Agnes charging out with a tire iron. But I know what I felt. There was a pull there. I think I awakened an ability too, Joanna. I think it’s some kind of mental influence or hypnosis.”
Joanna’s face lit up with a massive, beaming smile, and she practically radiated the energy of a proud parent. She grabbed Rachel by the shoulders, giving them an affectionate squeeze as she praised her. “Look at you! That is absolutely incredible, Rachel! I am so incredibly proud of you!”
Rachel blushed deeply, a shy but genuine smile breaking through her serious expression. “It really happened just like your dream, Joanna.”
Joanna nodded knowingly, her eyes shining with excitement. “Exactly like the dream. This ability is going to help the team tremendously, Rachel. Just like Julian’s electricity power, having a mental telepathy user completely changes the game for our survival. You did amazing.”
Before they turned to leave, Joanna’s expression softened into a look of cautious concern. She placed a reassuring hand on Rachel’s arm. “Just be careful for the next few days. Many ability users get dangerously bad fevers right after an ability awakens as their bodies adapt to the new energy. I want you to stay home and rest for a bit just in case it hits you. Julian might not get a fever though since he had one right after he was electrocuted.”
Rachel nodded, grateful for the warning. With their secret shared, the two of them turned and finally walked downstairs together to join the rest of the family for lunch.
Danielle smiled warmly, looking around the table at everyone’s empty plates. “We know we can’t compare to everyone on strength,” she offered, her voice steadying with a newfound sense of purpose. “But I really would like to offer cooking for the team as my way of contributing.”

Joanna hummed in agreement, a gentle smile spreading across her face. “That should be fine,” she said softly. “Having nutritious, hot meals changes everything for our morale and stamina. We’d love to have you
andle it. You can begin coordinating with Jolie. She will stock the pantry”
A chorus of cheers and thumping fists on the table erupted from the rest of the team, sealing the deal. Everyone secretly agreed Danielle’s cooking was simply leagues ahead of everyone else’s. Ryan looked immensely relieved that his family had found their niche, and Danielle beamed, already thinking about how she could make the most out of the supplies they brought back.
Joanna left the team behind to help Danielle clean up after lunch and unpack the supplies they grabbed. Also Jolie began making a list of items she would leave here for Danielle to cook. While the team stayed behind to discuss menu ideas and requests, Joanna left the apartment and walked upstairs./
On the second floor, she decided to set up some beds and gear in the apartment since going in the space was nice but over the next few days before they left, she needed to help her team grow and stand on their own. Joanna couldn’t explain it, but a sense of urgency has steadily been building. She knew exactly what was coming but her fear was the timeline. Too many things differed from her dream in the timeline.
Staying out in the open will help her team develop better instinct and tolerance for the apocalypse. After stocking the apartment she sent the message to the team. While water and electricity worked they could bunk in the upstairs apartment but she still planned to leave when the military convoy started out in a few days.
Just as Joanna went to pocket her phone, she remembered Mrs. Klein in 3B. Earlier, Uncle Nate had chased the poor elderly woman, mistaking her for a zombie. Feeling a twinge of guilt, Joanna decided to check on her and offer some supplies as compensation.
Tapping into her pocket dimension, she filled a grocery bag with shelf-stable comfort food: canned soups, crackers, pastries, honey, and bottled water. Bag in hand, she left the apartment and walked up to the third floor.
