room crupted into genuine applause, the awkwardness completely forgotten. With Jolie’s new power, that made seven ability users, eight if you count Caleb. That is a huge power up for survival.
Joanna, still eating her food, smiled warmly at all the good news before swallowing and looking/around the room. “How has the city been?” she asked.
Everyone paused, the cheerful morning atmosphere instantly dropping into a somber, heavy quiet.
Allen let out a sarcastic snort, shaking his head. “Almost Fallen,” he described bluntly. “The police are completely gone. Most of the remaining survivors are flocking to the military, practically begging for protection. The army remnants seem to be offering civilians passage to two main places: either a massive base being set up in Evercrest, or slightly north to a fortified base in Shadesville.”
Caleb paused mid-bite, his sharp eyes locking onto Joanna across the table. “That is where the Nightshade base will be,” he revealed softly.
Joanna’s expression instantly turned ice-cold, a palpable aura of killing intent radiating from her body tha made the temperature in the room feel like it plummeted. Her grip tightened on her utensils. “I thought Elliot would set up near Felton,” she said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, low whisper.
Caleb smiled gently, entirely unfazed by her sudden dark shift. “Actually, he would have, if he had managed to get a hold of Julian’s money. But I used my threads early on. I made sure Julian was on that plane with you from the very beginning, cutting off Elliot’s funding and forcing him to move to an alternate plan.”
Julian stared at Caleb, his expression shifting from surprise to outright affronted. “You’re the one who has been giving me those nightmares this whole time?” he demanded, pointing a finger at the delicate-faced dream weaver.
Caleb sighed helplessly, raising his hands in a calm, placating gesture. “Well, I wanted to protect you as well, Julian. The information I gathered from the environment showed a grim future for you if you stayed behind. You are destined to be one of the biggest, most formidable fighters in history. I couldn’t let Elliot destroy that potential before you even had a chance to awaken. You needed your capital to prepare for
survival.”
Julian’s mouth opened to snap back, but the weight of Caleb’s words hit him. The anger drained from his face, replaced by a sudden, heavy silence. He dropped his hand and stared down at his plate, looking completely quiet and pensive as he tried to wrap his mind around the idea of his own destined strength.
The rest of the room remained still, processing the revelation that Caleb had been pulling the strings of their fates long before they ever met him at the shipping port.
Caleb lightly cleared his throat, drawing the room’s attention back to the strategy at hand. “Give me a day to meditate,” he requested calmly. “I will push my threads across the city to gather more data, structural layouts, and future plans. But because of Julian and a few other people I influenced, Elliot is having a real hard time getting support for his schemes.”
Joanna leaned forward, her curiosity piqued despite her cold anger. “What other people?”
Kailee snorted loudly, a malicious, evil grin spreading across her face. “My cousin, for one.” She leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms with satisfaction. “You know Elliot’s trusted assistant?”

Joanna paused, her mind instantly racing back to a pivotal moment from her past. “Megan Foster is your cousin?”
The revelation hit her like a lightning bolt. Joanna had first learned about Megan’s precarious situation and her close ties to Elliot back when she was shopping in the jewelry store in Felton. Knowing that Caleb and Kailee had been pulling threads to destabilize Elliot’s inner circle from the very beginning made the puzzle pieces of this survival game fall perfectly into place.
Jolie looked completely surprised, her jaw dropping slightly. “Isn’t Megan the one who cheated on her husband and ran off with Elliot?”
Joanna nodded slowly, her expression hardening. “Yeah, that’s her.”
She then turned her piercing eyes directly to Kailee, her gaze so intense and freezing cold that it made the hairs on the back of Kailee’s neck rise instantly. The legendary air manipulator, who could blow away hordes of the infected without breaking a sweat, suddenly felt small under Joanna’s scrutiny.
Kailee immediately held her hands out in a defensive, placating gesture, frantic to distance herself from her cousin’s reputation. “Hey, just because we are cousins doesn’t mean we are alike at all! I swear! Caleb already influence her to the coast. She will be dead from the tsunami soon.”
She let out a frustrated huff, her eyes wide as she looked around the room for backup. “She always picked on me when we were kids, and honestly, she has more scheming and bad blood in her than anyone else in my entire family. I promise you, I can’t stand her!”
After a tense moment, Joanna nodded, allowing the tight friction in the room to dissipate. She turned her focus to Caleb. “Start gathering your information, but the time table is short. Within a few days, the military convoy is heading out to Evercrest. We were going to tag along, and it’s on our way to the first safehouse. I want an update on the situation before we leave.”
Caleb agreed instantly. “I’ll get to work right away. I just need a quiet room to be completely alone in.”
Joanna looked over at Ryan. “Can you guys put up with Kailee and Caleb?”
Ryan agreed of course, nodding warmly to the newcomers.
Joanna turned back to the group. “Caleb and Kailee will stay here with Ryan and his family.”
She then shifted her gaze to Willow. “I heard you want to go with us as well.”
These past few days, the young girl and her grandmother had quietly grieved for Willow’s parents’ deaths. After a lot of tears, they realized they had no remaining reasons tying them here to the city of Aurora.
Willow nodded firmly, her eyes full of determination. “Yes, we want to join you. We have our own supplies and want to go with your team.”
“Ok,” Joanna said. “Start packing. Bring everything you can. I promise I have the space.”
Allen spoke up again, drawing her attention. “Boss, most of the building evacuated last night with the military convoy. It’s practically a ghost town.”
Joanna nodded, her mind already calculating the leftover loot. “Alright. Jolie, take some people and look through the apartments that are empty. Pull anything you guys want out into the halls, and I can pack it all away into my space before we leave.”
