Chapter 129 Hey, looking this good in the apocalypse is hard work

Jonna woke up-feeling entirely refreshed, the deep sleep having cleared the lingering fatigue from her mind. To maximize her recovery, she took a quiet soak in her special spring, which sent a massive wave of revitalizing energy rushing through her body.

Once she got dressed, she headed downstairs to the main living area of the villa. Jake and Julian were already wandering down the staircase, both fully dressed, geared up, and ready to head back out to the real world.

Julian leaned against the banister, eyeing Joanna with a sharp, calculating gaze. “Look at that,” he murmured, his voice laced with his usual aloof wit. “The hoarder queen returns, radiating enough energy to light up a small city. Did you leave any magical water in the spring for the peasant class, or did you absorb all of it for yourself?”

Jake walked past him, completely quiet and relaxed, scratching the back of his neck as he slumped onto the sofa. “I checked the cows. They’re happy. Unlike some people who just stand around looking pretty.”

Julian didn’t miss a beat, smoothing his jacket down. “Hey, looking this good in the apocalypse is hard work, Jake. Someone has to maintain the aesthetic standards around here while you talk to livestock.”

“The livestock are better conversationalists,” Jake deadpanned, stretching his legs out. “At least the cows don’t complain about the upholstery in The Beast.”

“It’s called structural appreciation, you caveman,” Julian countered smoothly, crossing his arms. “That vehicle is a work of art. You probably want to paint flames on the side.”

Joanna burst out laughing, the banter completely erasing the final remnants of her morning grogginess. “Alright, you two, cut it out,” she said, shaking her head as she walked over to the table where some jerky and spring water was. “Though flames on The Beast actually don’t sound half bad, Jake.”

Julian feigned pure horror, putting a hand over his chest. “Great. Now the boss is joining the peasant revolt. My refined sensibilities are under attack.”

Jake just let out a rare, quiet chuckle from the couch, thoroughly satisfied with his small victory.

While they snacked on beef jerky and washed it down with cool spring water, Joanna leaned against the kitchen counter and looked over at the guys. “What do you think about Caleb and Kailee?” she asked, her tone turning analytical.

Jake, remaining quiet and relaxed, took a slow chew of his jerky before answering. “Kailee is a cannon,” he I said bluntly, his voice low. “She’s dangerous if she panics, like at the docks. But she cares about Caleb. She’s

loyal to him, which means if we keep him safe, we keep her in line. I trust her instincts, even if they’re loud.”

Julian swallowed his sip of spring water, his sharp wit cutting right through the room. “And Caleb is a walking, talking invasive privacy violation,” he remarked, holding his bottle aloofly. “The man practically read my portfolio through the fabric of space and time just to get me a plane ticket. It’s terrifyingly efficient.”

He paused, his expression softening just a fraction into genuine seriousness. “But he’s honest about his fragility. A liar with that kind of power would pretend to be a god. He admitted he’s a glass cannon without the cannon. He needs us to survive, and a dependent asset is usually a loyal one.”

Jake nodded in agreement from the couch. “He’s useful. We need eyes on the road ahead.”

ma chewed her jerky thoughtfully, weighing their assessments against her own.

Joanna soon pulled them out of her space and into the second-floor apartment, where the faint light of late- morning filtered through the windows. Without wasting any time, the three of them set to work on upgrading their strength.

Julian and Jake poured out a handful of the glowing zombie cores they had gathered from the duffel bag earlier and began absorbing the raw energy, their postures turning focused and still as the power circulated through their bodies.

Meanwhile, Joanna opened her leather satchel and focused on the fifty uncut emeralds. She began absorbing the gems slowly, feeling the dense, volatile surge of spiritual energy rush up her arms. To keep the intense influx from overwhelming her meridians, she continuously sipped on her special spring water, using its restorative properties to maintain a perfectly smooth and controlled process. One by one, the rich green stones faded to dull gray as her storage space drank the wealth, expanding its boundaries securely in the background.
