Chapter 134 I agreed to his terms

Jona walked over to the window of the second-floor apartment, watching Commander Briggs stride toward the exit down below. Flanked by William and his heavily armed contingent, Briggs moved with an effortless, predatory rhythm that immediately dominated the bleak landscape. There was an intense, enigmatic mystery to him-a man who carried the heavy, concrete power of the old military structure while operating with ruthless, adaptive strength in a new world of chaos and death. Even from a distance, his towering linebacker frame looked entirely unyielding.

Suddenly, right before reaching the armored transport, Briggs paused. As if he possessed an innate, tactical radar that knew exactly when he was being observed, he snapped his head upward. His icy gaze locked directly onto the second-floor window.

It was just a glance-brief, searing, and heavily charged-before he looked away. He climbed smoothly into the front seat of the lead vehicle, slammed the heavy door shut, and the military convoy kicked up dust as they drove off into the ruins of Eldon.

Behind her, the apartment door clicked shut again as Julian, Jake, and the rest of the team filed back into the room, their faces etched with deep caution and burning curiosity.

Joanna looked around at the gathered faces, her voice steady as she updated them on exactly what the commander had proposed.

“I agreed to his terms,” Joanna concluded flatly, leaning against the edge of the table.

Rachel nodded in immediate agreement, her eyes bright with strategic calculations. “Those supplies are a huge win for us. High-grade pharmaceuticals will buy us security and leverage.”

The rest of the group nodded along, recognizing the immense value of the haul, but Joanna’s expression remained deadpan. She looked across the room, her gaze sharpening.

“We need to leave this city anyway,” Joanna said, her tone turning purely tactical. “It’s time to split up. Tonight, I am taking Rachel and Kailee along with Julian to handle the pharmaceutical facility. Jolie, Jake, Allen-you three need to lead the rest of our people to the shelter past Eldon. We will meet up with you there after we are done with Briggs.”

The room grew quiet as the division of labor sank in.

“Every zombie core you harvest along the way, split it among yourselves to strengthen your abilities,” Joanna continued. “Once you get to the shelter, have everyone work together to clean out the undead in the area, but be smart about it. I suspect the zombies inside the drug facility might be level twos. If you guys come across a level two after you get to the shelter, do not engage them alone. They are twice as strong and twice as fast as the level ones we’ve been fighting.”

The team tenses instantly at the mention of a new, mutated threat, the weight of the danger settling over the room, but they offer firm nods of understanding. They knew the risks, and they trusted her call.

Joanna shifted her focus, looking over at Raven, who was still cradling Titan tightly in her arms. She scratched the back of her head, a rare look of slight uncertainty softening her tough demeanor as she studied the little corgi.

“Titan has an official ability now,” Joanna said, gesturing toward the dog. “And since Raven says he understands her really well, he may have mutated much earlier than we realized. If it’s possible, I want you

guys to try to teach him how to control and use his gravity power while you’re on the move.”

paused, looking thoughtfully at Titan’s alert, intelligent eyes. “Honestly, I have no idea if an animal can absorb zombie cores to level up. Maybe you guys can test that out and help figure it out during the trek to the shelter.” Raven grinned widely, hugging the sturdy little dog closer, while Jake and Allen nodded.

The apartment door opened, and Ryan led the remaining members of the community into the room. Danielle, Caleb, Kailee, Willow, Josiah, Uncle Nate and Mrs. Klein filed in, their faces tight with anticipation as they looked to Joanna for direction.

Joanna stood straight, commanding the room instantly. “We are leaving this city,” she announced without

preamble. “I am taking a few people with me tonight. The rest of you can leave tomorrow with the military. They will help provide safety through Eldon.”

A heavy silence fell over the newcomers. Willow stepped forward, her voice carrying a trace of anxiety. “Are we ever coming back here, Joanna?”

Joanna looked her dead in the eye, her tone unyielding. “No. Once the military pulls out of this sector, thi entire city is going to fall completely. There will be nothing left to come back to.”

Willow swallowed hard but gave a resigned, trusting nod.

“I am taking Kailee, Julian, and Rachel with me tonight,” Joanna stated, her tone final and brooking no argument. She looked over at the two women, her eyes softening just a fraction. “It’s better for you to get comfortable with your powers while I am right there to look out for you.”
