Chapter 139 Raven can talk to animals

Finned

  1. Joanna called out, looking over at her prepper expert. “We should have a decent amount of water at the shelter, but I have several large jugs of my spiritual water. It will help everyone out while I am away. Make sure you pack that for tomorrow.”

Jolie nodded, her tablet already in hand as she logged the spiritual water into her live warehouse inventory.

“Tonight, you guys sleep in sleeping bags,” Joanna added, setting her empty bowl down and looking around at the team. “I will handle packing up everything else in this area. When the soldiers come, go downstairs with us to meet them.”

They finished cleaning the remaining dishes in quiet, synchronized efficiency. Once the counters were wiped down. Joanna centered her mind and, with a swift flick of her wrist, pulled them out of the storage

space.

The dirty, empty atmosphere of the second-floor apartment rushed back to greet them. Raven stepped forward, carefully bending down to put Titan the corgi onto the hardwood floor. The small dog shook our his fur, giving a low, rhythmic whine as he looked around the bare room.

“Joanna, Titan says he wishes he could stay in that space forever,” Raven murmured, scratching the dog behind his ears.

Joanna let out a soft laugh, the lingering weight of her nightmare lifting just a fraction. “As nice as it sounds, I can’t stay in the space hiding. It’s not who I am. And I know I was given this storage space to rewrite this whole stupid apocalypse.”

She turned away, preparing to head toward the doorway. But after two steps, her boots froze against the floorboards. Her analytical mind, always tracking every detail and calculating every anomaly, suddenly locked onto the words that had just been spoken.

She stopped. A cold prickle of realization washed over her.

Slowly, Joanna turned on her heel and looked back at Raven. The room fell into a heavy, echoing stillness.

Quietly, her voice dropping into a tense, piercing whisper, she asked, “Wait… Raven, how do you know that Titan said that?”

Raven blinked, her posture stiffening as the room’s attention instantly locked onto her. She looked down at Titan, then back up at Joanna, her eyes wide with a sudden wave of confusion.

“I… I don’t know,” Raven stammered, her voice small and unsure. “I just… I heard him. Like a clear voice in my head. I thought everyone could hear it.”

Titan let out a sharp, affirmative bark, wagging his stubby tail as he looked between the two women.

Julian stepped forward, his eyes narrowing in fascination. “Raven, dogs don’t talk. If you heard him, it wasn’t with your ears.”

“Try it again.” Joanna commanded softly, her tactical mind instantly calculating the massive utility of this breakthrough. “Ask him what he wants right now.”

Raven swallowed hard, closing her eyes as she focused entirely on the corgi. After a tense, silent moment,

she opened them, a look of sheer disbelief washing over her face. “He says the food inside the storage space is premium quality, but he wants the dried beef jerky from the third shelf of the warehouse kitchen right

Oh, and he says Julian’s electricity makes his butt itch and his fur look ridiculous.”

Julian choked on a laugh, while the rest of the team exchanged stunned, breathless glances. Titan simply sat down, looking up at Julian with a smug, defiant tilt of his head.

“You can talk to animals,” Joanna stated, a satisfied smirk breaking across her face.

Her mind immediately raced down a long line of strategic contingencies. The world was already beginning to splinter, and it wouldn’t just be the humans changing. Once the animals began to mutate/Raven would be a great addition to the core group. Having a translator who could read wild, infected, or evolved beasts would give them an unparalleled tactical edge on the road.

Joanna’s sharp eyes caught Allen’s complicated look from across the room. The subtle drop of his shoulders and the flash of envy in his eyes didn’t escape her analytical gaze.

She caught his eye and gave him a deliberate, knowing look of her own-a silent, authoritative warning that clearly communicated: Don’t be jealous. Your time will come.

Allen caught the look, blew out a breath, and rolled his eyes. He shook his head with a faint smirk, acknowledging her silent reprimand but letting the bitter tension dissolve.

“Alright, Jolie,” Julian said, breaking the silence as he patted his static-charged hair down with a grin. “Go get the furry critic his premium jerky so we can get moving.”

With a final nod from Joanna, the team collected their gear, slung their duffel bags over their shoulders, and headed out of the quiet second-floor apartment. They moved down the stairwell in a tight, disciplined formation, the heavy thud of their tactical boots echoing in the narrow space.

Reaching the bottom floor, the core group met up with the remaining residents, who were standing among a sea of packed cardboard boxes and taped-up crates. Danielle and Caleb looked up as Joanna stepped into the room, the final preparations locking into place. The atmosphere in the crowded apartment was thick with anticipation, every eye turning toward Joanna for the final word.

Before she could speak, a sharp, loud vehicle honk shattered the silence, echoing loudly from the street right outside the apartment building.
