Rewrite the Apocalypse dream (by Dee Cari) novel Chapter 142

Chapter 142 I got to level two!

The convoy continued its slow, agonizing crawl through the choked streets. After half an hour of tense silence, Julian let out a low, guttural grunt from the back seat.

Joanna snapped her gaze to the rearview mirror. Strands of bright blue electricity were visibly dancing across Julian’s skin, crackling softly against the fabric of his jacket. His eyes flashed with a momentary spark. and his face looked incredibly fierce in the dim light of the cabin.

He took a deep breath, the current settling back beneath his skin, and looked up with a wide/grin. “I did it. Joanna. I got to level two.”

Joanna stared at him, impressed by the raw power radiating from the back row. A smirk crossed her face. “Nice work, Captain Crispy!”

The tension in the van instantly evaporated. Everyone burst out laughing, the sound cutting through the grim atmosphere of the ruined city. Julian smirked back, leaning his head against the headrest, clearly pleased with his newfound strength.

Ten minutes later, Rachel exhaled a slow breath as the final core faded into dust. She opened her eyes, looking calm and radiant.

“Wow,” Rachel whispered, stretching her fingers. “The power is amazing. I can’t believe I made level two!”

Joanna glanced back. “How does it feel? What changed?”

“Before, my telepathy felt like screaming through a thick wall,” Rachel explained, her voice confident. “I could only project static to a single zombie just to freeze it. Now, the frequency is perfectly clear.”

She looked out the window at an infected stumbling past a storefront.

“It’s like a dial I can tune,” Rachel continued. “I can broadcast a mental dampening wave to multiple zombies at once, masking our presence. If I target a specific one, I can completely override its hunger. I can force it to walk away, turn around, or act as a shield. The mental feedback doesn’t hurt my head anymore.”

Julian let out a low whistle. “Looks like I’m not the only heavy hitter back here.”

Joanna smiled, her eyes returning to the dark road. “Good. We’re going to need that control before this night is over.”

The convoy ground to a halt with a screech of tires. Headlights flooded the intersection ahead, illuminating a sudden, chaotic swarm of zombies pouring out from the side streets. They weren’t wandering aimlessly: they were tightly packed, moving in a synchronized rush as if they had been deliberately herded into a trap.

Up front, the soldiers spilled out of the armored trucks. Gunfire erupted, muzzle flashes cutting through the dark as the military efficiently mowed down the front lines of the infected.

Joanna leaned forward, her eyes narrowing as she watched the tactical display. The soldiers were clearing the zombies, but something felt entirely wrong. Her inner radar spiked.

“Look at the cars blocking the intersection,” Joanna whispered, her voice sharp as steel. “They haven’t crashed. They’re lined up perfectly bumper-to-bumper to block the lanes. It’s too neat.”

Before Julian or Rachel could answer, the shadows around the barricade shifted. The final zombies dropped dead, but the soldiers didn’t advance. Instead, figures emerged from the alleyways and from behind the

ly parked cars. They weren’t military, and they weren’t infected.

“Survivors, Kailee breathed, her foot hovering over the gas.

“No.” Joanna hissed, her eyes locking onto the weapons in the newcomers’ hands-barbed wire wrapped around baseball bats, heavy logging chains, and rusted pipes. Their faces were wild, dirt-streaked, and twisted with desperation. “They’re raiders. Kailee, move! Now!”

The warning came a second too late. With a roaring chorus of savage shouts, the nasty survivors charged the convoy. A massive man swung a heavy industrial chain, shattering the passenger window of the closest military truck with a sickening crunch. Another raider leaped onto the hood of the second truck, bringing a baseball bat down onto the windshield, spider-webbing the glass.

They weren’t trying to scavenge; they were hunting. The trap had sprung, and the van was stuck right in the middle of the kill zone.

Kailee didn’t hesitate. Bracing her hands against the steering wheel, she channeled her elemental power. A sudden, violent gale erupted from the sides of the van, a swirling vortex of pressurized wind that slammed into the approaching raiders, throwing them off balance and forcing them away from the vehicle.

Right outside the driver’s side window, a raider slipped through the perimeter, driving a rusted blade straight into a soldier’s chest. The soldier collapsed. Before the killer could pull the blade free, Kailee thrust her hand out the open window, releasing a concentrated sonic pulse. The shockwave hit the bad guy dead in the chest with a booming crack, launching him backward into the dark.

Inside the van, Julian’s eyes flared brilliant blue. “My turn,” he snarled.
