an’t fully grasp it yet,” RJ whispered, frustration tightening her face as she pressed her fingers to her forehead. “It seems like one is another powerful zombie, and the other… it has a heartbeat, but it fades in and out as if it’s a zombie too. Wait, there are other readings in there, faint heartbeats cutting in and out. I know that doesn’t make sense, but it’s the best I can do right now.”

Joanna nodded calmly, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “That’s okay, RJ. You did great. Now wha is the best way to get the zombies out of the way so we can get inside without alerting whatever is in Pharmatec?”

RJ looked down at the massive, shifting sea of business suits and laboratory workers clogging the street below. “Since their anchor to this spot is just a byproduct of the mind-zombie’s main focus, they are probably highly sensitive to environmental shifts. If we can disrupt the air currents or create a specific, directional stimulus away from the front entrance, they’ll drift toward it blindly. But we have to make sure the distraction doesn’t originate from the facility itself, or we’ll trigger the creature in the basement.”

Joanna murmured out loud, her eyes scanning the dark streets. “So, we need a zombie dinner bell to be more enticing than the monster’s suggestion. A quiet distraction that doesn’t alert the zombies inside. I know what we can do!”

Before RJ could ask for details, Joanna grabbed her arm. In a sudden flash, she teleported them both back to the original six-story rooftop, materializing right next to a startled Commander Briggs.

Briggs was just about to swallow a mouthful of water when Joanna and RJ suddenly appeared right next to him. The shock caused the massive commander to choke, coughing and sputtering violently as the water slipped down his windpipe. He glared at Joanna, his face red with a mix of suffocation and sheer annoyance.

Joanna offered a slightly sheepish shrug before her expression snapped back to serious. “I have an idea,” she said, quickly breaking down everything RJ had discovered about the mind-zombie in the basement. “We need an enticing, quiet distraction to break the telepathic suggestion holding the zombies there. Once the loop is broken, they’ll wander down the street away from the facility, where your soldiers can quietly eliminate them. Meanwhile, Julian and I will infiltrate Pharmatec and neutralize the threat inside.”

Briggs wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, his cold eyes locking onto Joanna. “Fine,” he barked, his tone leaving absolutely no room for argument. “But I’m coming with you.”

Joanna worked through the final details. “RJ, you and Kailee will stay back here and help the soldiers out. You’re both a lot quieter than Julian anyway. Briggs have your soldiers hide out on both sides of the streets to funnel the zombies over.”

RJ nodded in agreement but raised an eyebrow. “Okay, but how exactly are we distracting the zombies quietly?”

Joanna smirked, turning her gaze over to Will. The lieutenant was still huddled in the corner with Kailee, the two of them locked in a low, quiet discussion, completely oblivious to the sea of undead below them.

“Will is our Pied Piper,” Joanna said, her smile widening. “He can do it.”

On cue, everyone on the rooftop slowly turned their heads, staring intently at the unsuspecting soldier. Across the roof, Will felt the hairs on his arms suddenly stand up. Shifting uncomfortably, he paused mid- sentence and looked up, only to find the entire team silently drilling holes into him with their eyes.

Nervous, Will got up and walked over to the group on his own. Kailee, who had been sitting with him. looked like her new favorite toy was leaving and quickly got up to follow him.

Joanna explained the details of her plan to the lieutenant. Before Will could even answer, Kailee stepped forward fiercely. “I have to go with him. What if a zombie bites him?” It was painfully obvious to everyone that Kailee was falling hard for him. Julian covered his mouth to hide a laugh, earning a sharp, stern look from Joanna.

Briggs spoke up, his voice cutting through the tension. “Will, take a team to clear the building/directly across the street. That way, you guys can split up and set up a crossfire.”

Joanna stopped him with a raised hand. “I can clear the building first. Me and my crew are faster.”

Briggs looked at her, his jaw tightening. “Can you teleport me over there too?”

Joanna smirked. “Use the stairs, Commander.”

Before he could argue, she grabbed Kailee, RJ, and Julian, teleporting them all instantly down to the ground level before sprinting across the dark street. A flash of pure annoyance crossed Briggs’ face. He turned to his soldiers and barked, “Pack it up and get ready.” With a heavy sigh, he turned and started the long walk back downstairs.

By the time Briggs and Will finally made it all the way down the six flights of stairs and out into the alley, Joanna and her team were already visible on the fourth floor of the building across the street. Through the dark, hollow windows, sharp flashes of blue electricity danced against the glass as Julian cleared out the remaining stragglers.

One of the soldiers stared up at the building in sheer awe. “Man… she really does move faster.”
