Chapter 153 I Got It On Camera

Fre minutes later, Joanna and her team strolled out of the front doors of the cleared building. In the alley. Briggs had already perfectly secured the street, his men positioned like ghosts in the shadows.

RJ walked out into the middle of the empty asphalt and took a deep breath. “I can wait here, boss,” she said, bracing herself to read the mental shifts. “Once the loop breaks, I’ll guide them into the net.”

Joanna nodded seriously. “Be careful.”

With the trap set, Joanna, Briggs, Julian, Kailee, and Will walked the final block toward the massive, eerie wall of zombies. The silence of the night was broken only by the low, communal drone of the undead staring at Pharmatec.

Will clutched his rifle, his eyes wide as he looked at the thousands of corporate-dressed monsters. “Uh, guys? Real quick question. How exactly am I supposed to be the Pied Piper here? Am I supposed to just…. yell at them?”

“Oh, absolutely not,” Julian said, his tone entirely aloof as he casually examined his fingernails. “They were corporate lawyers and executives, Will. You have to speak their language to get their attention. Try shouting that the quarterly bonuses are being canceled, or that someone left a fish dish in the breakroom microwave

Kailee shot Julian a fierce glare before turning to Will, her voice suddenly dropping into an incredibly protective, enthusiastic purr. “Don’t listen to him, Will. If you want, I can use a localized vortex to gently lift you up into the air so you can do a majestic flip. That will definitely catch their eyes. You’d look so cool.”

“Please do not launch the lieutenant into the air,” Briggs grumbled, his linebacker frame tense as he scanned the perimeter. “Will, just take your shirt off and run across the intersection. Half of them are dressed up anyway; they’ll think it’s an afterparty.”

Will blinked, looking thoroughly horrified. “Sir, with all due respect, I am not stripping for the undead.”

Joanna smirked, enjoying the chaos for a brief second before snapping back into leader mode. “Alright, enough. Will, just wave your hands a little and give a sharp whistle. Once the mind-zombie’s suggestion gets distracted, they’ll follow the brightest thing they see.”

Joanna paused right outside the zone, her expression hardening as she eyed the massive crowd. “Kailee, cover Will once the zombies chase him. Only give a gentle push to keep him safe and let them chase him straight into the trap.”

Kailee nodded fiercely, her eyes completely focused on Will.

Joanna then turned her sharp gaze to the commander. “Why are you coming with us?”

Briggs looked directly at the dark Pharmatec building, his linebacker jaw tight. “Don’t worry about me. I can hold my own.”

Joanna looked only half convinced by his answer, but she didn’t have time to argue. She nodded once. Sliding into the shadows, Joanna, Briggs, and Julian ducked into the dark alley, waiting for Will to ring the dinner bell.

Will stepped out into the middle of the intersection, took a deep breath, and flipped on his high-powered tactical strobe light. He blew a sharp, piercing blast on his military whistle.

Nothing happened.

The thousands of zombies in business suits and office attire didn’t even twitch. They remained frozen, staring blankly up at the Pharmatec building, completely locked under the basement monster’s telepathic spell.

Will cleared his throat, his face turning bright red. He gave another loud whistle and waved his strobe light in a frantic circle. “Hey! Uh… look over here! Brains! Fresh brains, guys! Come and get ’em!”

The crowd stayed dead silent. A single piece of trash drifted past Will’s boots in the wind.

From the shadows of the alley, Julian let out a quiet snort. “Riveting performance, Lieutenant. Truly. I think the guy in the lab coat is moved to tears.”

“Shut up, Julian,” Joanna hissed, though she was rubbing her temples.

Panicking under the intense pressure of everyone staring at him, Will completely lost his military composure. He tossed his rifle over his shoulder, raised his arms in the air, and began doing a bizarre, wildly uncoordinated interpretation of the chicken dance while aggressively waving his flashing strobe light. “Bawk bawk! Hey! Over here! Look at the shiny light! C’mon, corporate America, let’s move!”

Everyone in the alley went completely stunned. Briggs’ mouth fell open in absolute disbelief. Kailee stared with a mixture of sheer horror and deep, unwavering infatuation. “Oh my gosh,” she whispered, her eyes shining. “He’s so brave.”

Suddenly, the telepathic loop snapped. A zombie in a torn blazer stiffly turned its head toward the flashing strobe and the flapping arms. Then another turned. Then twenty. A low, collective groan rippled through the intersection as the entire mass of corporate undead suddenly pivoted and began shuffling aggressively toward Will.
