Chapter 177 He Wants Briggs Out Of The Picture

Julian spoke up, leaning back in his chair. “My property is along that same ridge, about ten miles from your place. It actually might be able to support the troops.”
In an all too innocent tone, he added, “Briggs can take his men there and find us in the spring after the snow melts.”
Everyone turned, giving him a pointed, deadpan stare. It was blindingly obvious he just wanted the commander completely out of the picture.
Briggs slowly set his biscuit down, his jaw tight as he stared back at the smug billionaire. The silent tension in the room grew thick enough to cut with a knife, leaving it up to Joanna to shut down the territory war before it escalated further.
Joanna let out a heavy sigh, pinching the bridge of her nose. “For now, I think the third shelter is the best option. We can see your place once we get up there, Julian.”
Cutting off any further bickering, Joanna reached into her inventory and pulled out a large, heavily marked- up map, spreading it across the polished dining table.
“Regardless of where we stay in winter, we aren’t going anywhere empty-handed,” Joanna said, her finger tapping a bold red circle on the grid. “We still have places to collect supplies from before the snow locks us in. This construction warehouse is our primary target, and we need to move fast.”
Briggs jumped in, leaning over the map. “In my larger convoy, we have enough supplies to last the next month, but it won’t last all winter. I have several locations in Dillon and Westridge that I planned to stop by for more supplies.”
Joanna looked at him, her eyes narrowing slightly. “Did Jax know about any of those places?”
Briggs looked away, a tense silence hanging over him for a second. “Only one of them in Dillon. The other two were scouted by me.”
Joanna nodded, pulling a marker from her pocket. “Let’s add those to the map. Then I am leaving it with you, Caleb. Send your mental threads out and gather any intel you can find on these areas.”
She quickly plotted the coordinates Briggs provided, stepping back to calculate the rapidly shrinking timeline.
“If we only have a few weeks to hit these places, then we need to leave this location in four days,” Joanna stated, her tone sharp and decisive. “The second location is near Westridge, so we can try to get everything done there in another four days. We may need to cut some trips short, depending on how long travel will take with the storm rolling in.”
Joanna turned toward her crew. “Jolie and Kailee, work with Will on a wishlist for the families. I need specifics on gear, supplies, and housing.”
Joanna continued “Warm clothing I snagged from the mall needs to be handed out immediately. Also I will pull out some ladders and metal stairwells I have along with a few grills so they can cook in the courtyard.”
Jolie nodded, pulling out a notepad, while Kailee gave a sharp salute. “Consider it done, boss,” Jolie said. “We’ll get it sorted before the Dillon convoy arrives.”

“In Eldon, Julian and I both dealt with level two zombies,” Joanna continued, her expression dead serious. They are a completely different animal. If we want to survive what’s coming, we need to get stronger and faster.”
She leaned heavily on the table, looking at the group. “Unfortunately, with mostly level one zombies out there right now, it takes a massive quantity to make a difference. We absolutely need to focus on hunting them down, harvesting their cores, and leveling up our abilities before the real winter hits.”
Julian nodded slowly, his eyes flashing with dark determination. “She’s right. If we encounter another level two without a higher power level, numbers alone won’t save us.”
“When we rest, we need to absorb cores,” Joanna concluded, her eyes scanning everyone at the table. “Then, when we go out, we need to collect more cores. It’s a grind, but it’s worth it. That’s the only way we stay ahead of them.”
The room nodded in agreement, the reality of the apocalypse setting a clear, repetitive boundary for their daily routine.
Briggs sat up straight, knocking his knuckles against the table. “My men can help round them up or secure the perimeter while you harvest. If it means keeping my soldiers alive, we will play our part in the grind.”
“With our base getting bigger and stronger, we need to start assigning formal positions,” Joanna said, looking around the table. “After escaping Eldon, I realized I need my squad out on the road with me from now on. That means the base needs to be heavily protected, and we need others to run it while we are gone.”
