back alley-exploded into an epic theater of elemental violence. As the mind-controlled zombies reached the rear clearing, Rachel released her grip, and the ravenous horde snapped out of their trance, lunging forward with desperate shrieked roars.
Julian moved with terrifying, aristocratic grace. He didn’t even break his stride, stepping into the center of the alleyway as blinding arcs of blue electricity violently cloaked his entire body. He flicked both wrists outward. Jagged, hyper-velocity lightning bolts ripped through the air, punching through five zombies at once and exploding their skulls in bursts of smelling smoke.
Beside him, Briggs unleashed absolute hell. He slammed his palms onto the concrete floor, channeling his newly upgraded level-two element. A towering wave of bright, high-temperature orange flame erupted forward, instantly melting the asphalt and engulfing a cluster of twenty infected. The heat was so intense that the zombies turned to crumbling black ash before they could even hit the ground, leaving their glowing level-one cores clattering cleanly onto the concrete.
The incoming horde was relentless. A fast-moving, supervisor zombie clad in a shredded manager’s uniform burst from a side door, leaping from a high metal catwalk directly toward Julian’s blind spot.
“Watch your head, princeling!” Briggs roared..
Before Julian could pivot, Briggs threw his arm out, launching a concentrated, explosive fireball that slammed squarely into the airborne mutant’s chest. The impact blew the creature backward into a brick wall, instantly vaporizing its upper torso, its intact level-one core dropping straight down onto the floor with a metallic ring.
Julian paused, the blue electricity crackling over his eyes dimming just enough for him to look over at the smoking soldier. The lingering irritation from the car ride about Drew dissipated, replaced by a cold, calculating appreciation. Julian gave a slow, elegant tilt of his head. “Passable timing, Briggs. I suppose your reflexes aren’t entirely dulled by those muscles.”
Briggs let out a low, rough grunt, a rare smirk tugging at his lips. “Don’t get sentimental on me. Just keep frying them.”
The two men moved back into the fray, their powers suddenly blending with deadly synchronization. Julian’s lightning arced through targets that Briggs’s flames had superheated, creating devastating elemental chain reactions that tore the remaining horde to pieces in seconds, the cores scattering across the alleyway.
Near the edge of the parking lot, Jolie watched the clearing wind down. With a mischievous grin, she extended her hands toward the earth. Thick, thorny green vines whipped out of her sleeves like green lightning, piercing through the legs of a small cluster of five straggler zombies. Instead of crushing them, she expertly used her plant ability to drag them backward, binding them lightly against a perimeter chain- link fence near the main entrance.
“There,” Jolie laughed, dusting off her hands as the final echoes of crackling electricity died down. “A little welcoming committee left behind just for Glacier’s group to deal with. Can’t make it look too easy for them.”
Briggs and Julian stood side by side amidst the smoking ruins of the horde, their breathing quickly returning to normal as their level-three and level-two stats settled, a newfound, quiet respect locking between them.
Just as they were drinking their rejuvenation spring water to cool down, a sharp ripple tore through the air,

took one look at the scorched concrete alleyway, her eyes widening with a proud smile at the sea of glowing level-one crystals scattered across the floor. “Wow, look at all the cores, guys! We definitely met today’s quota for sure.”
With an expert flick of her wrist, her spatial storage thrummed with a heavy, magnetic pull. In a fraction of a second, every single glowing core clattering on the ground was cleanly sucked into her personal pocket dimension space, leaving the asphalt completely bare.
“I’m already done inside,” Joanna added with a confident smirk, wiping a speck of dust from her sleeve.” swiped everything except for a few choice rows of canned peas and corn I left right by the loading dock doors for Glacier to find.”
Briggs let out a deep, satisfied chuckle, wiping his brow. “Perfect. As long as we got the motherlode, the ice boy can have his consolation prize.”
With the factory stripped bare, the team piled back into the three-row SUV and hit the road.
The car ride back involved everyone complimenting each other’s abilities. Jolie leaned over her seat, gesturing excitedly toward the back row. “Julian, those lightning bolts were insane! And Briggs, that fireball? Spectacular timing!”
