Without hesitation, Joanna teleported inside. The chaos of the room hit her instantly. The first attacker already lay motionless on the floor, his throat brutally ripped out. Nearby, a second man was raising his weapon, getting ready to strike Leo down.
Moving with blinding speed, Joanna instantly teleported directly behind the second man. Leveraging her super strength, she twisted sharply and snapped his neck with her bare hand, neutralizing the threat in a fraction of a second.
Joanna looked up from the dead attacker to see Leo. He was beat up, sporting a nasty black eye and a split lip, but he was in much better shape than he would have been if she hadn’t arrived.
Since Leo didn’t have any deep, gashing wounds to attract her attention, his zombie aunt completely ignored him. Instead, her glassy eyes locked onto the fresh corpse on the floor-the man with his throat ripped out. With a wet, enthusiastic grunt, she lunged forward and face-planted right into the middle of the dead man’s chest.
What followed was a horrific display of terrible table manners. She dug in with a loud squelch, her decaying fingers tearing through clothing like wet tissue paper. She began to eat, making wet, enthusiastic smacking noises that sounded remarkably like a toddler aggressively enjoying a bowl of spaghetti. Stringy bits of flesh flew like sloppy noodles, a few wet drops splashing onto the nearby floral wallpaper. She even let out a small, satisfied burp between mouthfuls, completely lost in her private, gruesome buffet.
Joanna winced, stepping back to avoid a rogue splatter of blood. “Well,” she muttered, tapping her earpiece to call Jake. “At least she’s occupied.”
Joanna tapped her earpiece, breaking her gaze from the messy buffet on the floor. “Jake, the coast is clear. Bring the Beast up to the house.”
“Copy that, boss. On our way,” Jake’s voice crackled back.
Turning her attention to Leo, Joanna let out a heavy sigh. He was wearing the shirt she had just given him yesterday. Unfortunately, it was torn to shreds from the struggle, looking like a collection of rags barely hanging onto his shoulders. Exasperated, Joanna unzipped her duffle bag as a cover, yanked out a fresh shirt from her storage space, and threw it right at his head.
“You have speed, Leo,” she said, her voice a mix of frustration and relief. “Why didn’t you use it?”
Leo caught the fabric, looking thoroughly dazed. A sudden flush of embarrassed color crept into his cheeks. He stared blankly at his zombie aunt, who was currently making loud, happy smacking sounds as she continued chowing down on the intruder.
He swallowed hard and looked up at Joanna. “I don’t abandon Auntie.”
Joanna sighed, a sudden weight settling heavily in her chest. The contrast was almost too sharp to bear. Her own mother and sister had abandoned her without a second thought, and they would have gladly sold her out for a profit if given the chance. Yet here was this young man, fiercely loyal and risking his life for an aunt who had literally turned into a messy-eating zombie.
She looked from Leo’s flushed, stubborn face back to Auntie, who was currently making wet, squelching noises as she enthusiastically dug for a second helping. It was a bizarre, stomach-turning sight, but the pure devotion behind Leo’s actions struck a chord deep inside Joanna.

The loud, rumbling growl of the Beast pulling up into the courtyard broke the silence, its heavy tires
ching over the gravel outside.
Joanna, not quite able to hide her disgust with his aunt, asked him, “Will she be alright in here by herself?”
Leo didn’t answer. He only stared at her, still looking lost in his own world, but he began to take off his shredded shirt and put on the new one slowly.
Joanna, well used to his strange manners by now, just shook her head and continued. “I am here to trade again. Can we discuss this outside? I brought my friends this time.”
Leo still didn’t walk; he glided outside just as Jake was leading Raven, Michelle, and Warren toward the house.
Joanna gestured to the group. “These are my friends.” She turned and pointed toward a garden bed right next to the house. “I wanted to trade for one of the bushes there.”
