Chapter 198 Road Meeting

Finished

Warren carefully sealed the vials of Leo’s blood, while Jake hoisted the newly potted virobane bush and began carrying it toward the heavy doors of the Beast. Michelle finished packing her medical kit, still stained with dirt from her encounter with Auntie, but eager to get moving. Using his speed, Leo grabbed a chicken and gave it to Michelle. “Gift.”

Joanna looked back toward the door where his zombie aunt was somewhere inside, probably still sulking over her scolded knuckles. “Leo. You have a few of Auntie’s favorite bushes right? I think those bushes could help her feel better. Try to get her to eat the leaves or berries, okay?”

Joanna wasn’t entirely sure if the virobane could actually help his aunt, but based on Warren’s research and Dr. Anderson’s old notes, it seemed promising.

Leo nodded. “Okay,” he whispered.

Joanna turned and started backing away toward the transport. As she walked, a practical thought struck her: How would you even get a zombie to eat plants when they only want human flesh? She shuddered, imagining Leo having to wrap a virobane leaf around a piece of raw meat like a gruesome, apocalyptic sushi roll just to trick his aunt into taking her medicine.

Before she could dwell on it further, Leo turned. He started gliding away with that super creepy, effortless motion of his, heading straight back towards the farmhouse door.

Joanna climbed into the Beast with everyone else, and shut the door. Jake threw the vehicle into gear, and the massive transport roared down the main road, heading back toward the safety of the bunker.

As they drove, Jake looked in the rearview mirror and praised his sister, his voice full of protective pride. “You did amazing back there, Raven. Getting that intel from the animals was huge. I knew you could handle yourself.”

Raven smiled slightly, leaning back against the armored wall of the vehicle as she took in her older brother’s praise. Jake turned his focus back to the road, but his grip on the wheel was relaxed, clearly relieved that his little sister was safe and had proven herself so valuable to the team.

In the back of the transport, Michelle and Warren leaned over a portable workstation, discussing one of the virobane leaves quietly. Warren traced the unique, glowing veins of the leaf with a sterile instrument, pointing out structural anomalies that aligned perfectly with Dr. Anderson’s late-stage research notes. Michelle nodded along in a hushed whisper, her medical background helping her analyze how the plant’s chemical properties might interact with human cellular structures to halt the infection.

Joanna watched the tree line pass by outside the reinforced window, her mind still wandering back to the farmhouse, wondering if Leo would actually manage to get his aunt to swallow those leaves.

Everything looked good until Joanna saw pigeons sitting on a few of the wrecked cars on the side of the road up ahead.

Joanna leaned forward, her eyes narrowing as she tapped Jake on the shoulder. “Jake, slow down. Look at the cars ahead.”

The quiet discussion between Warren and Michelle instantly died down, and Jake’s protective posture stiffened as he tapped the brakes, bringing the heavy transport to a cautious crawl.

Joanna sighed. She just wanted to get back and absorb cores. Now she had to crash a mutated pigeon convention? Still dealing with the absurdity of a zombie aunt, Joanna was just plain mad.

Raven spoke up. “Joanna, I can hear pockets of conversation. They are not zombies. They are discussing a strange plant that pulses.”

Joanna froze at the mention of the pulsing plant. In her dream, this was known as the most intelligent plant after the apocalypse started. She had never seen it before, but she had heard terrifying rumors of its immense, destructive capabilities. She also remembered a critical detail from her dream: the plant’s warning system consisted of powerful pulses that acted like heavy air charges, generating violent shockwaves capable of slamming into and throwing a threat far away from it.

The crazy thing is that the timeline is different. Plants and animals were affected by the toxic rain or so they believed. Now it seems, these changes were always there just under the surface and developing at a faster
