Chapter 199 Dante And The Pigeon Federation

Finished

Jake’s brow furrowed, his hands tightening on the steering wheel as a look of deep offense crossed his face. “The Beast? How dare they! I just polished this armor!”

Joanna just shook her head, the heavy tension in the vehicle breaking for a fraction of a second as she sighed. “Even mutated pigeons still act like all the other pigeons.”

Despite the looming threat of a highly destructive, intelligent plant nearby, the immediate tactical problem was now fifty massive, bloated birds threatening a coordinated aerial assault on their transport. Back in the hold, Warren and Michelle exchanged a baffled glance, completely thrown off by the shift from apocalyptic botanical terror to basic avian vandalism.

Joanna grumbled, stepping away from the front console. “Fine, let’s talk to them. Tell them we just want to drive past.”

Joanna and Raven climbed out of the heavy armored doors of the Beast and slowly walked toward the roadblock. The fifty giant pigeons puffed up their iridescent matted feathers, chests swelling as the human pair approached.

Raven held her hands up in a peaceful gesture, as she began silently communicating with the flock through her mind. After a tense moment of mental negotiation, the 11-year-old bowed low to the giant birds to show respect. Watching from a few paces back, Joanna held back a hard eye roll, praying none of her team was filming this absurdity through the transport’s viewports.

Raven spoke, her voice entirely serious as she stood up from her low bow. “The pigeon in the middle is named Dante, the esteemed Pigeon Federation’s president. He says he is happy humans are finally intelligent enough to speak properly in pigeon.”

Joanna stared at the large, bloated bird sitting majestically on the hood of a rusted sedan. Dante puffed out his chest, looking down his beak at them with supreme authority.

“The Pigeon Federation?” Joanna muttered under her breath, her hand twitching. “You have got to be kidding me.”

With a grand, sweeping motion of his feathered wings and a series of loud, commanding coos, Dante turned to his flock. Raven listened intently, nodding as the message passed through the air. The fifty giant, bloated pigeons immediately relaxed their chests, settling back down onto the rusted frames of the wrecked

cars.

“It worked,” Raven whispered to Joanna, a small smile breaking across her face. “Dante was the one to call off a large-scale avian assault. They won’t attack now but would like to invite us to convene with him.”

Raven continued, “Joanna, the pigeons are angry that parts of the countryside are seeing plant monsters. They were discussing options for the monsters and hoped we could help them. In turn, they are willing to give us eggs.”

Just then, a giant pigeon sitting right near Dante popped a massive egg out onto the rusted hood of a sedan

and carefully backed away from it. The egg was incredible, easily larger than a duck-sized egg.

Joanna lifted her brows, staring in absolute shock at the massive, smooth oval now sitting on the car. Her anger evaporated into pure bewilderment. Free, oversized protein delivered directly by an organized avian political body was definitely not on her apocalypse bingo card today, but she wasn’t about to turn it down.

Behind them, the passenger side window of the Beast rolled down, and Jake peeked out, staring at the car

bel with wide eyes. “Boss,” he called out over the idling engine, “are we… Are we setting up a trade agreement with a bird government right now?”

Joanna took a slow, deep breath, letting the sheer absurdity of the apocalypse wash over her. She turned her head toward the cracked transport window, pinning Jake with a flat, unblinking stare.

“Yes, Jake,” Joanna said, her voice dropping into a deadpan echo. “We are establishing diplomatic relations with the Pigeon Federation. Go find a crate, line it with rags, and get out here to collect our first tariff payment.”

Jake blinked, looked at the massive, smooth egg resting on the sedan, and slowly rolled the window back up without another word.

Raven looked up at Joanna, her young eyes wide and deadly serious. “President Dante wants to know your response, Joanna. He says there is a pulsing monster encroaching on their primary roosting grounds three miles north. The pulser plant is completely blocking several of their nests, and they can’t get back to them.”

Joanna looked back at Dante. The giant, bloated bird was currently preening a mangled patch of shinty gray feathers on his wing, yet somehow still maintained an air of smug, political superiority. She weighed the tactical reality: fifty giant, aggressive birds could rip the armor plating right off the Beast if they felt slighted Plus, these oversized sky-rats might prove themselves useful.

“Alright, we deal with the plant,” Joanna muttered, rubbing the bridge of nose. At least killing a juvenile pulsar plant would be easier than fifty large birds. She turned sharply toward the transport and barked an order. “Jake! Get out here, grab the egg, and take Michelle and Warren back to base. It’s too dangerous for a full crew. Raven and I will go handle the pulser plant alone.”
