Chapter 216 Try To Leave Them Alive

Joanna quietly takes measure of her yard. Two old, beat-up sedans sits near the tree line. A heap of trash festers in the corner. They’ve been using her property for maybe a week A cold, methodical rage builds inside her. There are two options run them off and risk them returning, or eliminate the threat permanently. She decides on the latter.

She looks over at the team. “I am going to teleport under and surprise them. You three get the hatch open and come down when I give the signal.”

Jolie looks a little worried. “Be careful, boss!”

She nods and teleports underground. The layout is the same as her other containers, so she materializes inside the back chamber looking from inside her space. Any minute, her teammates will come down through the front hatch.

She moves like a shadow, staying within her space to survey the room. some of the bunks held people. Several women in torn clothing, bruised, and are curled together in a corner, their expressions numb.

In the front was the living area. Six men sat eating rice and jerky, laughing at something another man said. On the end of the couch sat a heavyset man, his arms spread wide across the back cushions, taking up space like he owned it. A thin man to his left spoke up. “I can’t believe those idiots from city center thought they could take you, Eric. I bet they are going to think twice before telling us no again.”

Eric nodded slowly, working something out from between his teeth with his tongue. He had a large stomach that strained the buttons of his shirt and the kind of stillness that made the men around him sit a little straighter. “You all are lucky I found this place and we had the guns to show them we mean business.”

The skinnier guy gave a nervous laugh. “True but that dog Simon Fletcher won’t forget what happened. Your’e not nervous?”

Eric huffs in confidence. “I shot his hand. Look around. It is the apocalypse. Without medicine, he is probably going to amputate it if he’s smart or die from an infection.”

Joanna stills, listening. Not him. She recognizes the name: Simon Fletcher. A memory flashes-a dream premonition of a terrifying, one-armed fighter who ruled Westridge, a man whose strength was legendary. She understands now. The man on her couch, Eric, was the reason Fletcher lost his arm. In the dream Fletcher was injured with a knife but now it was a gun shot. It doesn’t matter. Though he was cold and terrifying, he tried to warn her once and she somewhat knew him. This is more than just clearing out

squatters.

Joanna messaged her crew. There is at least twelve people here. Try to leave them alive. Come now.

She materializes right next to Eric. Before he can react, she drives her fist into his temple. His eyes roll back and he slumps sideways off the couch, unconscious before he hits the floor. The men started to scramble but Joanna already took out a second man next to Eric as the hatch opened.

The room erupts into shouts as Julian rushes in with Jake and Jolie right behind. Small arcs of electricity flew against the room electrocuting three men near the bunks. Joanna kicked another man who flew from the coach charging at her. He went flying so hard he cough up blood before slumping to the ground.

Another man withdraws a knife and charges Joanna from behind. Before the blade can connect, she

vanishes. His eyes widen. Suddenly, she is behind him, kicking his legs out from under him before slamming his head to the floor until he’s unconscious.

The rest of the men are wrapped in vines while Jake uses metal blades to pin them to the ground. The women in the corner are crying in terror, holding each other.

Julian rushes over, checking on her. “Are you alright?” Joanna nods. “Yes, everything is fine.” He looks over at one of the pinned men, who is yelling curses while wrapped in vines and metal stakes. A bolt of electricity shoots into the man, making him convulse before he passes out. The room instantly gets quieter.

Joanna squeezed Julians arm before turning to the women. Joanna stepped past the unconscious bodies, her expression a flat, unreadable mask. The heavy stench of sweat and stale food filled the tight quarters of the underground bunker, but her focus remained entirely on the corner. She knelt a few feet from the traumatized women, keeping her hands visible but her posture rigid.

“They’re done,” Joanna said. Her voice was ice, completely devoid of emotion. “Get up. We are clearing this room.”

The women flinched at the sharpness of her tone, but the oldest among them looked over at Eric’s slumped, defeated body. A shuddering breath escaped her lips as the realization of their rescue began to pierce through the shock. Jolie stepped forward, breaking the tension by silently sliding water bottles and rations toward them.

Julian walked over to Joanna, looking down at the groaning, bound men with open disgust. “What do we do with this trash? You said to keep them alive.”

Joanna stared down at Eric, working through the calculus of her premonition. In her dream, Simon Fletcher had been a terrifying, one-armed ruler of Westridge. If she helped him out early, he could be a barrier for her. No one can get through to Evercrest/without going through Westridge. She didn’t owe these men mercy, but she suddenly had a use for them.

“Strip them,” Joanna commanded coldly. “Take their weapons, their shoes, and their gear. Every scrap of
