Chapter 215 Intruders In The Night

Joanna executed only a few more teleportation jumps, pausing briefly just a couple of times to clear debris from the road ahead. Soon, a familiar stretch of landscape came into view-she was finally at her own property. Between the initial race, the gas stop, and clearing the obstacles, the entire cross-country journey had taken her a mere two hours
She keyed her comms. “How long until you guys get here?
Briggs’s voice chimed in, sounding completely stunned. “Joanna, are you there already? Even pushing our speed to the limit, we’re still three hours away.”
Joanna smiled, entirely unconcerned. A deep wave of satisfaction washed over her; she could actually teleport this fast and this far now. Though she felt a little tired, the exhaustion was nothing like the debilitating fatigue she used to experience after using teleporting.
“Don’t worry about it,” Joanna told the convoy. “Just drive safe.”
She cut the feed and released her three trapped teammates from her storage space, blinking as they materialized. “We are here, guys.”
Together, the four of them walked through her front gate and began the trek down the long, winding dirt driveway. Joanna had picked this specific property precisely because the front portion was heavily wooded, providing perfect privacy from passing drivers. They walked for another five minutes before the dense trees finally began to thin out.
But as they approached the main clearing, Joanna froze, Voices. Distinct, murmuring voices were echoing from up ahead.
Her heart skipped a beat. Were there people on her land? Shock flared in her chest as a terrifying thought struck her: What if they found her underground shelter?
The four of them instinctively dropped low, stepping lightly over the dry leaves and twigs. Moving with practiced stealth, Joanna and her team hiked softly to the edge of the clearing, using the dense treeline as a shield. Joanna held up a hand, signaling for absolute silence as they crouched behind a thick patch of
brush.
Through the thinning branches, the main yard came into view, and Joanna froze.
Three men were sitting in her yard around a roaring campfire. They were filthy and disgusting, wearing stained, ragged clothes, their faces smudged with soot and grease. Joanna’s eyes locked onto the weapons slung across their backs and resting against their chairs. Her blood ran cold. She recognized the customized grips instantly–they were her guns. They had definitely found her bunker underground.
The first man shivered, leaning closer to the flames. “Damn, it’s freezing out here tonight,” he grumbled, rubbing his dirty hands together. “The boss is lucky he can stay down in that warm shelter while we’re stuck out here on watch.”
The man sitting next to him spat into the dirt and sneered. “Eric has become lazy since they found this spot,” he replied, shaking his head. “He’s happy to just sit underground and live off the meager supplies left behind. But we’re going to run out eventually. We should keep going into Westridge for more food, especially since winter is coming.”

The first man let out a harsh, unpleasant laugh. “Food? Right,” he sneered. “You just want to go into town and take another girl to have fun with.”
Before the argument could escalate, the third man sharply interrupted him. “Shut up already,” he snapped, casting a nervous glance toward the hidden shelter entrance. “If Eric hears you talking like that, he will put a bullet in you.”
Joanna focused her mind, activating the comm ink through her neural thoughts to connect her team and the distant convoy.
“We’ve got a situation,” Joanna’s voice echoed in the shared mental chat. “Three armed scavengers are in the yard. They definitely breached the shelter.”
She watched the men by the fire, her expression hardening as she sent her next grim realization.
“They aren’t alone. There’s a leader named Eric downstairs right now, and probably more people with him. We need to move carefully.”
“Jolie, use your vines to choke them out quietly,” Joanna commanded through the mental link. “Then Jake, use your metal ability to finish them. Keep it silent.”
Julian huffed, his thoughts flooding the chat with sharp irritation. “Let me just fry them. Three deadly electric bolts and they’re done.”
