Chapter 221 Julian Is Attacked

The flock’s cooing shifted unnervingly. Amassive, iridescent pigeon General Bernadette-strode up to Titan, ignored the humans, then puffed her chest, lowered her wings to scrape the dirt, and bowed in a heavy circle, chanting “coo/coo-roo-coo.” Titan froze, ears flat, letting out a low grumble as he leaned toward Joanna, eyes pleading.
Raven cleared her throat. “That’s the Sacred Courtship Ritual-the highest honor in the Pigeon
Federation.”
Before Joanna could react, Julian emerged from the gatehouse. He glanced from the amorous Bernadette to Titan’s alarmed face, then to Dante clinging to Joanna’s shoulder. Without warning, he seized Dante by the neck and flung him to the ground.
Dante squawked in outrage, puffed to twice his size, and with one vicious snap of his reinforced beak sliced through Julian’s boot-and skin. Julian stumbled back, blood seeping through torn leather.
“Julian, stop!” Joanna cried, rushing forward. She knelt beside him, glaring at Dante. “Stand down!”
Raven hurried to calm the flock. “You’ve just violated diplomatic immunity with an apex mutant!” she warned.
Joanna slid an arm under Julian’s, helping him to his feet. His ruthless CEO mask shattered, replaced by pain. “That’s enough,” she said firmly. “You’re done for the night. Get to the hot spring and soak that foot before it gets infected.”
Julian stared down at Dante, narrowing his eyes into a cold, dangerous slit. “I am watching you,” he muttered, his voice dripping with low threat.
Dante didn’t look remotely intimidated. Instead, the majestic mutant pigeon puffed out his iridescent chest, proudly preened his feathers, and let out a loud, triumphant coo as if he knew he had won the
argument.
Tired of the alpha-male posturing, Joanna didn’t waste any more time. She grabbed Julian by the arm and threw him directly into her storage space to deal with his foot shutting the entrance behind him to cut off his complaints.
With Julian out of the way, Joanna turned back to the courtyard just as Jolie jogged up, wiping sweat from her brow. “We’re all finished with the pigeon coop, Boss,” Jolie reported, looking between the giant birds and the lingering tension in the air.
Joanna looked down at her feet. Titan was whining softly, throwing reluctant, deeply conflicted glances back toward his massive female suitor, General Bernadette.
“Oh no, you don’t,” Joanna muttered, scooping the dramatic corgi up into her arms. She looked over at Raven, handing over the reins for the night. “Take charge out here. Lead Dante and the rest of the pigeons over to the new nesting area so they can settle in.”
Raven nodded, giving a sharp whistle to get the flock’s attention. With Titan safely tucked away and the avian defense force moving toward their new barracks, Joanna let out a groan of frustration.
The crew quickly wrapped up their remaining tasks for the night. Within fifteen minutes, Joanna gathered

her entire team and pulled everyone safely into her private storage space.

As the base vanished behind them, the profound peace and quiet of the pocket dimension filled the air. The heavy tension of the impending zombie threat instantly melted away. Leaving the apocalyptic wasteland behind, the exhausted team members immediately fled toward the luxury of the villa to wash up, grab a hot meal, and finally get some sleep
Joanna lingered near the entrance, stretching her aching muscles. Just as she was about to head toward the house, she caught the low, rumbling sound of Julian’s voice coming from the back area near the hot spring.
Curious, she walked around the edge of the courtyard. She found Julian sitting by the water, aggressively soaking his torn, bloodied foot. He wasn’t alone. He was currently talking to Piper, the lethal, mutated orchid, whose deep purple petals glowed faintly in the dim light. Julian was complaining bitterly to the plant about Dante’s blatant disrespect for authority.
Joanna shook her head, a soft smile breaking through her exhaustion. She walked up behind him, stepping quietly onto the grass. Before he could launch into another corporate-style rant about mutant poultry, she turned his head towards her, and leaned down, wrapped her arms around his shoulders, and pulled him intoja slow, deep kiss.
Caught completely off guard, Julian tensed for a split second, his CEO reflexes kicking in. Then his posture melted. He relaxed his grip on the plant, reached up, and gathered Joanna tightly into his arms, returning the kiss with an intensity that showed just how much the stressful day had weighed on him.
It was a perfectly sweet, romantic moment-until a strange rustling shattered the silence.
