Chapter 222 Leaving For Tech Valley

The next day, Joanna woke up to the rich, savory smell of breakfast drifting through the villa. The comforting aroma of frying bacon, fresh eggs, and hot coffee instantly out through the remnants of her deep, exhausted sleep, reminding her of the rare luxury her private storage space provided.
Joanna padded downstairs and slipped into the bustling kitchen. She grabbed a plate, piled it high with fresh food, and slid into an open seat at the main table. The atmosphere was loud and energetic, a stark contrast to the grim tension of the night before.
At the far end of the table, Rachel and Jolie were actively attempting to tease Briggs, though the stone-cold commander remained entirely unbothered.
“Oh, come on, Commander,” Jolie smirked, leaning across the table. “Word on the road is that level-two zombie almost had you pinned. Did you forget your lighter, or were you just checking to see if it wanted a morning cuddle?”
The table erupted into loud snickers. Briggs still ate, looking unbothered.
He took a calm bite of the delicious meat, his voice deadpan but carrying a rare, dry wit. “I was trying to let him down easy. I told him I wasn’t looking for a long-term commitment, but he just wouldn’t stop breathing down my neck.”
The kitchen exploded into roars of laughter. Caleb nearly choked on his eggs, Jolie laughed light and bright in appreciation of the commander’s rare comedic timing.
Joanna smiled, taking a sip of her coffee as she watched the interaction. Briggs’s unflappable nature, devastating fire power, and leadership were exactly what kept the convoy safe. They would need that calm, lethal focus; within the hour, they would be leaving the safety of the space to deal with the level-two ambush zone.
Joanna ate her breakfast in relaxed silence, thoroughly enjoying the rare moment of peace before the chaos of the road began. The casual banter of her team washed over her, making the kitchen feel almost normal.
Across the table, Allen slumped heavily into a chair. Still visibly sleepy and a little grumpy, he rubbed his eyes and stared at his empty plate with a scowl. He looked up at the bright, rested faces around him, let out a cynical snort, and sarcastically commented, “Why is everyone so damn happy and bright this morning? Did I miss a memo about the apocalypse being canceled?”
He leaned back, crossing his arms with a huff. “Because some of us were up until midnight building luxury condos for giant mutant pigeons. I’m glad my sleep schedule could be sacrificed so Dante could have a nice view of the courtyard.”
Caleb snickered, while Joanna just smiled over the rim of her coffee mug, entirely unfazed by his morning attitude.
Joanna smiled at Allen. “Thanks for last night, Allen. Seriously. Having that aerial coverage keeps us safe.”
She looked around at her crew, her eyes earnest. “Thank you to everyone for the hard work. We’ve turned this place into a real stronghold.”

Situng apart from the group, Raven sighed. “I wish you guys weren’t leaving.”
Jake looked over, gently picked Raven up, and sat her on his lap in a reassuring hug.
“I know. Me too,” Joanna said. “But we won’t take too long.”

Before things got too heavy, Joanna cleared her throat. She saw Julian walking downstairs looking completely calm, showing no signs of his late-night encounter with the mutant pulsar plant, Piper. He silently grabbed coffee and a muffin, then sat down with the crew.
Joanna gave a small smile to Julian before turning her focus back to the team. Loriginally wanted to skip the drama on the road by just teleporting us straight to Tech Valley,” she admitted, setting her coffee mug down. “But something tells me Levi and his team are going to be weak when we find them. They’ll need heavy protection on the journey back. I think we should clear out the ambush areas you guys ran into last night first, and then I will teleport some of the way to the valley.”
Briggs leaned forward, his stone-cold commander persona cracking just enough to reveal a flash of genuine excitement. His fingers twitched with a spark of static heat. “Is it my turn to drive the Beast?”
Joanna laughed at his sudden enthusiasm, while Jolie rolled her eyes and smirked. “Men and their cars,” she joked loudly to the table. “Give them an apocalypse and they still just want to play with big trucks.”
Like a well-oiled machine, the team finished up and exited the storage space. Once outside, Joanna pulled out the Beast, its massive armored frame hitting the dirt with a thud so the team could pack up.
